hi, does anyone know of a site that has 'plans' on how to build a whelping box. hubby is pretty good at DIY as long as there are plans to go from. also what do people put on the bottom of there box, i've seen pictures of boxes with sawdust! and newspaper, someone told me to put an old carpet in it as long as mum can't pull it up.
also what does mum sleep on in the box?

Personally i use a TON of newspaper with 'vet bed' on top. that way any moisture goes through yet pups stay dry. and you can whip it out and have it washed and dried in a few hours. so 2 bits is enough. also its quite a good foothold for pups to crawl on but they cant get caught in it.

I have friends and family collecting old papers from the minute i know anything!

Mum sleeps on the same as the litter, because they're snuggled together.

hi 'discusdave' sorry but i havent got any info on whelping boxes yet. there seems to be no sites that you can get instructions on how to make one or what to put on the bottom. i think i'll go with the TON of newspaper and vet bed idea though. when is your girl due? just had my girl scanned, vet could only see 2 pups but shes only on day 28 so there could be more hiding. just have to wait and see

Breed books often have plans for whelping boxes of a size and plan suitable for the particular breed, certainly some of my cocker ones do.

yes some Labrador ones do also.  I used loads of newspaper and vet bed or profleece which is the cheaper version and very good washes and washes.

This is the same as I am doing at the moment, we start with a large bit of vet bed so it is better for mum but we are at the 3 week stage at the moment and mum is laying outside the puppy area and going in to feed and clean so have 3 smaller pieces now, I has always worked for us with no problems

We used a "Newborn" disposable whelping box for our litter and have to say were delighted with it - it stood the test of time too keeping dry and in shape until the pups were around 5 weeks - better than we expected as we'd bought a second one for back-up and never needed it :rolleyes:  You can order them on-line and delivery service is vg.  It can seem at first that it's a pricey "cardboard box" but it is very sturdy and withstood 8 pups and mum easily for a good period.

We had looked into the cost of buying a permanent one but as we don't see ourselves being regular breeders we reckoned it would just be something else doggy to fill up what is rapidly becoming precious available space in our large (but car free!) garage :D

It may not be what you'd prefer but thought it worth mentioning as an idea and I can recommend it.  They come in different sizes and do a special deal with vet bed and also for about an extra £10/£20 provide an emergency pack of such things as nutridrops, colostrum substitute and a couple of other things (memory failing me somewhat <lol>)

I used one last year and it was great, the only thing I have discovered since is if you line the inside walls with plastic and masking tape for the actual whelp it keeps it cleaner as mine got quite stained, a friend then told me the above tip which is what I will do next time. Hope this helps.
