I have a lovely golden retriever bitch (Great Grandad is a  ch "Stanroph" dog)  She has had all health checks and we would love to breed from her but as far as I can make out her parents were not KC registered so we are unable to register her.

Does everyone with good GR stud dogs only allow mating with KC dogs or does the fact that we have had all necessary health checks count for anything????

Guest do you mean that your bitch has had her hips and el;bows x-ryed and her eyes tested by a Veterinary Oprhalmologist, a general health check is not enough.

I can't see nayone reputable allowing the use of their stud as it would be pointless as regards giving the3 breed new genes as the offspring could not be registered and added to the breeds gene pool.

Does this mean if you can't get a good one then any one will do?

I believe dogs have to be KC reg to be hip scored too, so don't see how she can have all the necessary health checks.

I would forget about breeding her, and get yourself a good quality KC REG bitch. First contact would be a breed club.

Hi Husky, in actual fact an unregistered dog can be hip scored by the BVA. I have had this argument before and I decided to ask the BVA. They answered that yes an unregistered dog can be hip and elbow scored.

When I say "good" stud dog  mean as in pedigree, temperament and breed standard so no not any dog would do.

Also for your information dogs do not have to KC registered to have hips/elbows scored and eyes checked (by an opthamic vet) - the BVA accept them them provided the dog has been microchipped.

I think you'll find that only owners of unregistered dogs would consider letting you use their dogs, I'm afraid.

Yes dogs do not have to be KC reg to be hip/elbow scored by BVA, we had a few in when I was seeing practice and they were Irish KC registered but not KC reg, but we could use either the IKC number or the microchip number on the xrays for BVA. In Ireland we send all our xrays to BVA for scoring.
