Topic Dog Boards / General / lurcher pups from the same litter
- By kerrie [gb] Date 20.04.05 14:04 UTC
hey my dad was on about gettin two lurcher puppies from the same litter to use them as lamping dogs and i want to know if this is a good idea ive herd that two dogs that are related are more touble and aggressive with other dogs and themselves
but my dad says that is not true.
codey is gettin on better with other dogs and i think she will enjoy having two puppies around as she plays with ashley all the time and ash is a bull terrier.
has anyone else had two dogs from the same litter and are they juts like other dogs or can they be unruley

Ive never had 2 pups but i imagine it is pretty difficult with them

2 pups using the house as a toilet
2 pups ignoring you
2 pups chewing etc

It would take a lot of work as they would need to have time spent with them individually and there is the danger that they will want to play with each other and ignore you. If one makes a mess and you don't see, how do you know who made the mess / chewed the furniture etc. You will get all of the growing "pains" at pretty much the same time. They would need seperate walks to teach them how to walk on lead - come back when called etc.

Walking on lead would have to be separate and together, otherwise they might be fine on their own and play up together ;)
Same for all training   One wanting to sleep and the other wanting to play - this can lead to real grumpyness with each other.  Toilet training takes much longer - if one 'goes' and the other doesn't how do they know why you're pleased?  and they will only want to 'go' at the same time if you want to take them out separately ;)

Have had experience of 2 pups for 4 weeks (aged 8-12 weeks - until the one went to new home) wouldn't want to repeat the experience

i've had 2 pups the same age (although not from same litter) twice now and boy is it hard work. The toliet training takes twice as long, the basic obedience takes twice as long as you are doing each dog individually - in fact if i hadn't been at home all day (i'm a housewife) theres no way i could have managed to bring up well behaved and well socialised dogs.
I think your question about having 2 dogs from the same litter is interesting and as far as i know people have good and bad experiences - it may be worth doing a search as i remember seeing a few posts about litter sisters, brothers etc. I think most poeple would say dont do it and if you do a bitch and a dog is the better combination although it also depends on if you have other dogs.

I think the thing to stress from my experience is that if you have the time then anything is possible - if not then the outcome could be disasterous (sp?).

I don't think it is having two from same litter that is so much the issue as having two pups together full stop.  Littermates having the same genes have a higher chance of being of similar character so this may make rivalry when mature a little more likely, but I wouldn't have thought there was a lot in it, and that any two dogs of the same age are likely to have and cause the same sorts of problems.

I would never wish to do it, as I find it takes two years of concerted effort to have my dogs anywhere near how I want them and they are still maturing up to about 4 years old, which is often when the vieing for status gets going in ernest.

Given the amount of time it takes to train just ONE lurcher pup to be a good, safe and responsive lamping dog, i would say NO WAY.

You simply WONT have the time, as each pup will need to be trained seperately AND they will need to be trained together.

If you want two dogs to work together you need to get one absolutley solidly trained first, and that could take as long as 3/4 YEARS, THEN get another pup.

Much less than that kind of time frame and you risk the older dog reverting to puppy behaviour.
