Topic Dog Boards / General / Staff & 6mth Staff pup
- By Sacha S [gb] Date 19.04.05 17:33 UTC
When would it be a good idea to leave my staff pup bitch (6mths old) with my staff dog (15 mths old  he is castrated) together when i go out? They are separated at moment via a baby gate.  They get on very well, but do play fight quite roughly!
I would like to leave them together, just not sure when.

Hi,
I have 4 Staff's aged between 9 years & 9 months & would Never leave them together when I'm out. A fight could break out over something as silly as a crumb on the floor. I have known someone to arrive home to find one of there staffs killed by her sister.
Good luck, Tad.

I also dont leave my staffs together. Mine are 12 and 2
Tad is right they could fight over a crumb!
It really dont matter how well they get on.. better be safe than sorry :)

I don't leave mine together either.
They had a bit of a scuffle tonight when they were on their walk. Nothing serious just the little man being a bit jealous of his mum and he's bitten her leg and side.
Unfortunately I didn't take them tonight so have no idea what actually happened and hubby hadnt realised he was really biting her.
Seperate walks for a while I think.

Id say no as well
Mine get on great but they can get over boisterous in play and so i wouldnt advise leaving them unsupervised
- By kazz Date 19.04.05 20:48 UTC
I go with the majority on this.
My two also get on great but stay in seperate rooms when we are out and at night. So I'd say no too. At 15 months and 6 months your two are both still  of an age where they are very boisterous.

Hi Tad and Staffy owners et al  :)

Is this a general rule of thumb for owning more than one Staffy?  I've read on here before of tales of one being killed and another left dying when owners have returned to the house but I honestly didn't think it was something whereby a serious fight was a probability - more of with a "very few" it was an "outside chance"

I'd be genuinely interested to hear the views and experiences of any and all Staff owners on this - is leaving a pair or more who know and live with one another but unsupervised a complete No-go in your breed as a whole?

Regards, Teri

Ive heard stories and personally wouldnt chance it *just in case*

but that would go for any young breed I have and not just staffys :)
- By Teri Date 19.04.05 23:27 UTC
Hi Lel,

Thanks for your reply :)  By any young breed you have, do you mean other bull breeds?   It's just I've never heard these types of tales referred to or advice given in such generalised terms about any working, pastoral, toy or gundog breeds for example and only heard it applied in Utility Group to Jap Akitas of the same sex   is it a bull breed /  terrier trait?

Sorry to sound as though I'm quizzing you, I'm just surprised by it ;)  thanks, Teri

I personally have only ever owned staffys
This is my first time as a *multiple* (two) dog owner but because *any* puppies can get carried away when they play and therefore run the risk of *annoying* the older dog I wouldnt leave two together

but thats just my opinon- Im sure there are others that do
I just personally wouldnt take a chance :)
- By Teri Date 19.04.05 23:35 UTC
Cheers Lel.  I totally agree better to be safe than sorry - it's just that how some others phrased things made it sound as though any two Staffs left unsupervised regardless of age was a recipe for disaster

Thanks again, regards Teri :)

Hi, I've only ever owned Staffords, so I can't comment on other breeds. I am no expert, I'm only going by my own experience. My dogs Get on great 99% of the time, but they do have disagreements over food or a toy or maybe one wanting to rest when another wants to play. Luckily all I'd have to do to stop an arguement is shout, but if I'm not here to shout I'm sure the argument would result in a bad fight.  All my dogs get on OK with other dogs as long as they are not hassled by dogs off the lead etc. But at the end of the day we have to remember what these dogs were bred for. I wouldn't risk leaving them to get on with a fight.
Tad.

In 99.9% of cases of two staffies being left together you would probably come home and find them flopped where they were left.
But There is a very slim chance you could come home to a bloodbath :(
I do leave mine together for the 5 mins it takes me to go to nursery sometimes.
But only if they are both asleep and I make sure there are no toys within reach of them. Thats what my two playfight over. It could become serious one day though so they only have toys when I am there.

I wander if it is just Staffords, because all breeds of dog can fight. Only the other day we had a lab jump out of a car window (the car was parked) to have a go at my puppy. Luckily my woosy of a pup hid behind my legs. the worse thing was that the owner who was loading up the boot, found it funny! laughing & saying her dog wants to kill anything that walks past.
- By lisab staff [gb] Date 20.04.05 08:16 UTC
Yes all breeds can and will fight.
But Staffie fights can be much worse that an ordinary dog fight :(
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 20.04.05 08:51 UTC
I have a dog and bitch of 11mth and 10 mths they have never fought, they are both far too dopey, I do leave them together when we go out and we leave them with toys etc but to be honest when we are out I think they sleep 99% of the time.

Im worried now :(
- By Tad [je] Date 20.04.05 09:01 UTC
when we only had 2 staffs 1 dog & 1 bitch we used to leave them alone together. But when someone we know came home to a dead dog we soon changed our minds & started seperating them. The people had 5 bitches at the time & left them most of the day with the run of the house, so something was bound to happen. the dogs had already had a few scuffles!
It's just piece of mind to know that when I get home my dogs are going to be where I left them.

Thanks everyone for replying.  It's been a revelation!

Not hounds either.  My five and any visting dogs are left together if I am out, that ioncludes dobes, Spaniels, Yorkies, retrievers, Border Terriers.

I have heard that some other terrier breeds are also never left together unsupervised,a dn Akita's also.
- By Teri Date 20.04.05 10:37 UTC
Woops Brainless - sorry, missed the Hounds out  it wasn't intentional :P

I've never split my "pack" up apart from very small pups would be left in a crate just so they didn't injure themselves but that's more re. chewing a cable or whatever - no matter whether out for a couple of minutes or a couple of hours.   The only times I've left any in separate rooms is to keep the boys away from in season bitches but on a normal day to day basis they all clamber on the bed to watch me drive away (usually seeing me off with heads thrown back in "wolf song" :D ) and are sound asleep when I get back - and never any signs of a scuffle when I return.

I must admit I thought that was the norm for most breeds although obviously I'm aware that anyone in any breed could have a particular pair where it could result in trouble when left unsupervised.

Teri :)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.04.05 11:27 UTC
Sure you didn't it is just that real hounds of course are often kept as packs, so being able to rub along without major incident is an essential trait.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 20.04.05 09:40 UTC
My four dals are all left together, often sleeping in a heap, with no problems.
:)
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 20.04.05 09:19 UTC
I've got four staffs, my second girly is never left on her own with the others as she can be crabby and I wouldn't take the risk. My first girl and my lad sleep together adn (touch wood) have always been fine left together on their own (they seem to act like husband and wife :) ). My fourth is only four months old so sleeps seperately as she is mega boisterous and I would not take any chances.
I think it comes down to knowing your dogs and their personalities.
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 20.04.05 09:28 UTC
Well we're getting our third!!!! in two weeks and 4 days!!!! yiipppeee!

so I'll take your advice and not leave them all together, Ron and Rose are joined at the hip and hate being seperate, so they can stay together but a third might cause upset so we'll keep her seperate with the baby gate! We've got 2 crates a 48" and a 30" so we should be ok I hope...
- By poppynurse [gb] Date 20.04.05 09:38 UTC
Addictive aren't they!!!!!!!!!
- By lisab staff [gb] Date 20.04.05 10:02 UTC
I'd love another :D
The slobbery kisses are just too addictive.
Unfortunately there is no more room on my knee or in my bed and I don't think Hollie would be too happy with another pooch mooching around.
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 20.04.05 10:37 UTC
Oh i'd have hundreds if I had the time!!

I've got enough love and time for 3 and I think thats it!!
- By kazz Date 20.04.05 12:27 UTC
Hi. My two don't stay together when we are out or at night but thats because I just would not risk it okay they be fine together and just sleep or or doze but I would not personaly risk it. One fight would be one fight too many in my opinion and then you could get trouble why rock the boat.  This way everyone has peace of mind.

But its what suits at the end of the day. Your own choice, my choice is to seperate.
