We have problem with our neighbours cats coming onto our land - one of our dogs nearly caught one yesterday and I shudder to think of what would have happened to the poor thing if he had caught it :(. One of my neighbours has 6 cats and the other has 4 so there always seems to be loads of them on our patch - at the moment they are after the baby birds ( I found a dead woodpecker chick at the weekend ). The worst problem is that a couple of them sit just outside my kennel block and the dogs go absoloutely bananas !! - they are normally very setttled and quiet in the kennels but obviously this is more than they can be expected to put up with :D -  I have spoken to both neighbours but they both have the attitude that cats can go wherever they like - they are both lovely neighbours and we get on very well and I really do not want to fall out over this but I really don't want their cats in my garden - is there anything I can do ???

Get yourself a big bruiser ex-feral neutered tom cat from the CPL, that should sort out the neighbours cats!

A high-powered water-pistol (one of the Super-Soaker types) has been very helpful to us!

I'll watch this thread with interest - we have always had a few cats around, but now have new neighbours with 3 new cats, all very keen to explore our garden, and all very keen to walk across our patio, and get after our birds too. Banya was furious about the new cats, and in fact her recent spate of colitis coincided with their arrival.

Hi Trevor...

i too had this problem with neighbours cats coming into our garden and even into my kitchen where my dogs were napping, they must have thought it fun to taunt my dogs.
I tried water pistols and lound noises but to no real effect. cats tried to drink the water :-(
what actually stopped these two cats was the fact that one day my gsd had had enough and took off after one, which he managed to catch. My poor neighbour ended up with £500 vets bill to put the cat back together. thankfully she didnt blame me :-)
after that the cats stayed away.

i hope the water sprays work for you as i dont think my dogs way of dealing with it was very kind, but atleast the cat did live another day :-)

We have loads of cats in my street (I own 2 of them), but one day, a neighbours cat came into the house, my 2 didn't really care, but my dog went mad as to say, 'this is not your food, get out' and started to jump at the cat stand to get to this strange cat. The cat was so scared, that he never came back in my house.

my dad is a keen gardener,so we have bits of our garden fenced off, the cats smugly sit in the fenced off bits laughing at the dogs. they especia;lly position themselves opposite the longe window too to tease the dogs

Get a Willis. Cats don't come within 5 miles of here :D

I had the same trouble with neigbourhood cats, weve also used the water gun to no avail.  it drives my dogs nuts when the cats sit on the wall and taunt the dogs, but as u can probably guess they got hold of one, it was awfull I draged the dogs off and the cat limped away dont think it was hurt badly, lucky for him,as ive seen him on the wall since.  I wish there was something I could do to stop them, for their sake if nothing else!

Can you put those spikey things along the top of your kennels and fence?  Not the illegal ones, the plastic ones, work wonders with kids that climb fences!

We never ever get cats in our back garden where the dogs are not even our own venture there. They do say though the best deterant for cats is your own cat. You neighbours are right in the sense you cant really stop cats from going places they just go. Does seem an awful lot of cats to put up with though.
You have warned them about your dogs eagarness and I love cats dearly but if your dogs do get any there is little you can do about it.

we dont get bothered with our neigbours cats as ours will not tolorate any ,my cat is the boss and even the dogs know it ,our neigbour has a cat doesent dare come into ours, its a pain as it is always killing birds, all i can recommend is get a big tom.

We are surrounded by cats, but they don't come near the house or garden anymore. Why? It was easy, every time time I saw a cat I let the dogs out. As you can imagine, three bcs can move very fast...fortunately for them, the cats moved faster! :p

thanks for all your suggestions folks - I'm not keen on getting a cat of my own ( we like to  encourage birds into the garden and I also have chickens and sometimes baby chicks -easy prey for a cat :().

I don't understand why our feline visitors are not permanently scared off by my 6 large hairy Belgians - they go absoloutely ballistic when they see them and would certainly kill them if they could . I have warned my neighbours that this could be very real possibility but don't really know if I would be held liable if the dogs did hurt or kill the cats. It just seems a bit unfair that cats  can do what they like but dogs have to be so much more controlled :(.
