At what age do you "look " at your pups with a view to picking one to run on for showing?  and do you agree that there shoulders move from 4 weeks to 8/9 weeks? while they teeth  and how does this affect your decision on which pup to run on ?  M

I like to leave it as late as possible to pick show prospects but I've usually made my mind up by 6 weeks.  I know some breeders say they can pick when they are newborn and still wet but not me :-)

The shoulder blade isn't attached to the main skeleton and is always a movable bone but if you mean the resting angle changing, yes I believe this can change right up until maturity.  As the pup grows the shoulder can straighten ie become less well laid back, opening the angle between it and upper arm.  I've noticed this mostly in GSDs where a well laid back shoulder is required but in some breeds a more open front assembly is normal.

I usually start to notice the ones with promise at around 5 to 6 weeks and make my final decision the day before the first pup leaves for it's new home.  I like to assess them all in the flesh and from stacked photos of them taken at 7 weeks.

From birth I can pick the ones with lovely crested necks and strong hindquarters at the milk bar and these are the ones I am most drawn to if the rest is good later.

I have never run pups on as for me they are either staying or going so the decision is crucial, as it will affect the next generation and my next 3 or more years of showing.
