Topic Dog Boards / General / annoyed over teacup chihuahua craze
- By NEMO_CHIHUAHUA [gb] Date 18.04.05 18:13 UTC
Hi everyone,
I'm currently having a problem that whenever I take Nemo out for his walk we get stopped like 50 times with people asking me if he's a teacup chihuahua and I'm getting sick of informing people there is no such thing. Nemo may be small he's almost 15 weeks and 1 1/2 pounds which I guess would make him very tiny to people but he still loves to come along for walks with the retrievers, gets carried a lot of the way. But people are just getting silly with the comments and I just needed to rant somewhere over this. When will the madness end with people saying the "teacup" word to me. Also people think because he's small when he's out they have a right to just stroke him or attempt to pick him up without asking me, they never seem to think that they are giants to him and he doesnt know them. I've had many dogs before currently in the house we have 4 but I've never had anyone try and pick my puppy up before without even talking to me. I've also been grabbed in the street while holding him because people want to look at him. Sorry for posting this but it's really annoying me that people dont realise that he is a dog not a toy even though he's small.

There are some incredibly rude and thoughtless people around, aren't there? For heaven's sake, it's only good manners to ask if you can stroke/talk to any dog, let alone a tiny one - and pups need especially careful handling if they're not to end up scared for life. :( It makes my blood boil.

Yup - incredibly rude people, and they don't deserve your consideration.

I think in your situation I would only allow people to interact with him if they ask you first ;) if they are rude enough not to ask then they don't deserve your consideration

I've had this problem myself (bedlingtons are people magnets and the puppies are even more so) and if my dog/puppy are approached without my permission I just say in a sharp snotty voice "please don't touch my dog!"  and then if they ask why explain that so many try to pick them up/ruff them the wrong way without any warning ;) that it upsets them.  I then invite them to greet the dog/pup in a more acceptable way.  If they're offended - tough, they don't worry about offending me or my dogs!

people have no concidoration for you and nemo but im sure theyde have somthing to say if he bit them tho! they assume coz ther small and cute there harmless and there to be picked up but its wrong! i have a simler prob with my mini dacs coz shes small cute and different people are constantly commenting on her,at first it was great but now i just want to take her out without being stopped 100s of times :( .people are always trying to pick her up and stroke her without asking its rearly starting to get on my nerves 2 so your not alone!

horray I'm not alone with all this I really dont know what to do about it though because I don't want to come across as being as rude as they are. The other problem is once someone stops me they seem to mass in a crowd around him and if he didn't have such a loving cheerful nature someone would have been nipped by now, I know that he'll only take so much tho. Also had a fun time with someone who let their 5 yr old follow me and Nemo around for about 15 - 20 mins the other day without coming to get them because the kid thought Nemo was cute and wouldn't stop trying to stroke him even though I was  holding him. If he wasn't so good natured I could have had a serious problem, what am I meant to do if he bites a child when he's obviously being provoked.

Why don't people think it would be nice if they thought of our feelings for once

Look at it from the other side of the coin tho' ;) how would you feel if peeps where crossing the street to get away from you -hugging their kids in behind them as you had a killer dog ?? ..which would you rather have ?? ..I'm not being funny or argumentative but I'd rather have what you've got ;)

All I'd like is if people asked first and though of him being so small and being a puppy, I dont mind the attention once or twice but when you get it every 10 minutes and people following you and physically grabbing your dog it becomes hard to take him out. Just people being polite would be nice I'd never touch someone else's dog without asking and I definately wouldn't pick someone elses dog up.

hi sarah
its frustrating more than anything, were ever a go i seem to have a trail of kids behind me! coz shes so small she gets quite nurvious and 1 of these days chances are she may snapp.but itll be us who gets the blame for having an agressive dog! wen rearly people just need to show concidoration for her as shes not a toy.and behind her cute exterior she has got teeth! and i think many people just forget that!x i bet nemo is soooooooo cute tho .what colour is he?

I have the same problem with my chihuahuas, while i left my husband outside a shop one day and had the girls on a cushion in the shopping trolley ( old ladies type not asda type) and a woman just went to pick up our smallest one, luckily the door was open of the shop as i flew out there and told her off, she could have run off with any of them but luckily they were harnessed in at the time, i get fed up with the tea cup business too, i feel like wearing a huge badge with it on!!!!!

hi, he was only £450 due to his size he was the runt of the litter (covers nemos ears). I actually got him locally after a long look from a one off breeder his brother and sister were already spoken for by the breeder and the stud dog owner so he was the only one to go off to a new home, I was on a waiting list with one of the top chi breeders and I asked her advice before I got him and sent her photos of him and she said he's well proportioned. I did have reservations about his size because he was really tiny when I got him but he has the most amazing temperament very licky, loves giving kisses, loves everyone and everything and is incredibly bold, well he has to be with the retrievers but he holds his own. This pup is fearless and just loves everyone which is one of my problems with him being so popular he just see's people or other dogs whatever they may be and his tail starts wagging. He's such a happy little soul just smaller than a bag of sugar.

thats a good price for him! :) to be honest  would of thought you would of got charged alot more because he would be seen as a teacup chihuahua! and there the latest crase!even tho there is no such thing but people will belive anything its just a way for breeders to make more money! :( because hes a runt (put hands over nemos eares) is it just his size that is affected, and will he eventuallycatch up.or will he always be small?

I'm not sure yet, he's growing every day as you saw from his tiny baby pics he's grown quite a bit in 6 weeks, I looked at some chi weight charts based on his weight gain over the weeks he'll probably be between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 pounds full grown. I don't think he realises he's extra tiny to be honest, he swears he's a flat coat lol. I wouldn't have paid more than I did for a pup his size mainly due to health problems which thank god he's had none so far and the vet says he's very healthy (plus wants to take him home cos he's so sweet). All in all I'm very happy I got him and even if he is teacup size to me he's a normal chi. He cant help it :o)

It varies so much as they are like people all different sizes.I have One at 7 years and 7 1/2lbs and two who are 3 1/2lbs and are 4 and 5 years old, you will find that he will have growth spurts during his first year and contrary to what some people say they do change size and shape upto at least 18 months old and their coats continue growing for upto 3 years which is when my longcoat got her coat fully, though when my breeder friend told me this i didnt actually believe her, lol.I have had Chihuahuas for 21 years but dont breed and have rescued 2 and bought the others.

I have just had a look at your pictures (hope you don't mind) Nemo is adorable, he would so small next to my 10 week old bulldog pup who weighs 7kg! which is 15lb! He looks lovely, you should be very proud. I can understand your complaint though, I have it when i'm carrying Dozer, people pull on my arm to have a look at him. Bulldogs are very rare on the Isle of Wight, I have only ever seen 1 and the lady who runs the puppy class has only ever had 2 in the 7 years it has been running. People think he is a boxer pup! A bit of politeness would go a long way.

Your puppy is beautiful you are very lucky to have got him at such a reasonable price all the ones I have seen advertised lately have been £1000 and more. I loved looking at the pictures of him he is so cute.
