We were taking Glazby on a nice long walk yesterday and while we were on our way we spotted a GSD bounding over to us. We put Glazby back onto his lead and looked around for the owner but unfortunately there was no one in sight. The dog had a collar on it but seemed very nervy and I couldn't get close enough to it to look on its collar.
We carried on walking with a not so very happy Glazby as he was on his lead however the dog still continued to follow us. We decided to try and let Glaz off of his lead and see if they got on okay - if they did then we wouldn't mind this other dog following us so much.
Well - we let him off his lead and Glazby walked past the dog who turned round and mounted Glazby!! I've never heard of a male dog trying it on with another male dog before - and Glazby is in tact!! As you can imagine Glaz wasn't very happy and there was a bit of a scrap though nothing serious. We put him back on his lead but the dog STILL continued to follow us.
In the end we had to cross over a bridge and climb up and under the canal and left the dog on the otherside - hoping that it would find its way home. I felt ever so responsible for the dog and just hope that it was okay in the end. Its very difficult to try and look after it when you've already got your hands full with another dog and I wonder what you would have done in my place?
Did you phone the dog warden? It is up to them to catch strays. It could be that he is entire dog with 'wanderlust' that has escaped.

Other than that there wasn't a lot you could do if you couldn't get close enough to catch it. I found a collie running loose once with no collar but I was able to catch him and put him in one of the cages in my car. Then I phoned the dog warden who came to collect him. (Without, I should add, a word of thanks for making his job quicker and easier.)
No, unfortunately I don't have the number of our local dog warden - something I should rectify and put in my phone for future reference!! Just as a matter of interest - do they work 7days a week, this was on Sunday?
I thought that it must have been a wanderlust dog but I was really shocked - I thought that dogs could tell the difference between sexes - all matter of questions are now floating about in my head...... do you get gay dogs?!?!
This sounds familiar, my dog used to mount male dogs, think he had a preference. I thought he was gay too, but I was told it was a dominance thing. Boys will be boys...
I think dog wardens only work Mon-Fri and, as far as I know, they are only contactable via the local council who only take calls during office hours !:)
And as for 2 males mounting, I don't think it's that unusual - my 2 are at it almost non-stop !
Hope everything worked out for him. Unfortunately I have been in a car doing 70 mph when a GSD jumped over a barrier into my path, not a nice sight but the only good thing was that he was killed outright. No car for nearly 2 months though!! He had a collar on but no id. Never found out who his owner was and he was a lovely looking white dog.
This one looked quite skinny - I could clearly see his ribs but the collar on him looked almost new. I wish that I'd been able to get hold of him, I got my OH to take Glaz further down the path and then tried getting down to his level so as not to frighten him but he wouldn't even let me get close enough to stroke him let alone catch his collar. He seemed timid but friendly and was just happy to follow us.
I felt quite sad and guilty when he spotted us on the otherside of the canal - he looked as though he was trying to work out how we got to the otherside. :-(
Owing to a new act (Clean Neighbourhoods Act, from defra) that had royal assent on 7 April 2005 the local authority should be solely responsible for strays. However, the LAs are still aggreeing on what they will do so not sure yet if they will respond to 24/7 calls in the end from desparate owners. Contact your local council with regard to future arrangements.

When dogs mount each other it isn't always sexual...
