Can I as a Cavalier owner suggest you first contact the
breed club I do hope you are aware of the health tests that your bitch should have had done before you start looking for a suitable stud dog. these are
1.Clear eye certificate -can only be done by a BVA/ISDS/KC panelist & not your GP vet
2.Clear heart certificate(you will need to vist the club wbsite for details of this)this can be completed by you GP vet
3.A low hip score for HD & this entails a submission to the BVA scoring panel of a good set of X ray plates
4.An clear MRI scan for syringohydromyelia This again can only be done at one of three places & again information can be obtained from the club site. just because your cavalier does not have any symptoms of SHM does not mean that she does not have it
5. Checked for slipping Patellas by your GP vet
Add to this your bitch should be over 2 1/2 & preferably 3 years of age & the dog you intend to use should also have had all the above tests & also be only 2 1/2 preferably 3 years of age.
You should also ensure that you do not line or inbreed on the same dog/bitch on both sides of the pedigee
It is not just as simple as finding a dog the same colour as your bitch & mating them & failure to carry out any of the healths will leave you open to being sued for negliglence as well as producing puppies with health issues
I am not being rude or talking down but as the owner of a beautiful 2 1/2 year old dog with asymptomatic SHM(ie has no clinical symptoms but has been MRI scanned & does have SHM) who may or may not develop crippling & fatal symptoms I do not want anyone else to go through what I do everytime I look at my boy & I am not just saying this to put you off breeding
BTW if your bitch is very small & under 11 lbs in weight she should not be bred from for her health sake The idea wiehj for cavaliers is 11 to 18 lbs & breeding from very small cavaliers leads to health issues & a possible C section
