Topic Dog Boards / General / thinking of a new addition for the fold
- By ladyemma5 Date 15.04.05 16:04 UTC
Hi all,
further to my last posts i have decided to extend my family further with another ESS i was just wondering as i already have a full grown dog
if it is wise to buy another male.
The reason i ask is i have heard from other people that the introduction of  another male may not be the best way  and that a bitch being introduced may go more smoothly.
I also have a bitch who is a lab so could this cause a problem there.
My dogs are not aggressive and get on well with other dogs outside the home on walks ect, my dog also visits his brother regularly and there has never been a problem there at all, how ever this has always taken place at there house and not at mine.
any advice on what to do or try would be great,
emma.

I have 4 males and 1 speyed bitch. They have the occasional 'cross word' but nothing more...
Bitches tend to hold grudges and once fallen out will not get on again.Dogs tend to 'forgive and forget'

It depends mostly on the temperament of the male you have.  It sounds like he doesn't get ruffled with other dogs or over his territory so I think he would be fine.

I had an existing male dog who was a pussy cat and had no trouble at all bringing in another male.  However, when he went and I was left with the second male I knew his temperament would not allow another male so I had a bitch.

Hope this helps

My two Ess bitches would have killed each other, the longest they could stand each other in the same room was 20 mins. Although out on a shoot they actually worked very well together, they could never be left alone in an enclosed area. They ripped down a kitchen wall to get to each other. But when I lost Connie, Megan settled quite happily, to live with 4 Labs and not a cross word. She kept them in line though but without any aggro. Connie was the headstrong most antagonistice little bitch (In both senses) ;)  I now have 5 Lab bitches all living in harmony together. The usual 'grumps' but thats about it.

Have recently brought 3 rescues in for fostering, 2 bitches, 1 male, within 12 hours were integrating and accepted by my lot.
