Topic Dog Boards / General / ear problems with dogs that swim?
- By Star [in] Date 15.04.05 12:49 UTC
Has anyone any feedback or comments about the above. a friend takes his dogs swimming most weeks but they are sometimes developing ear  problems. He asked me if I knew anything about it. Is there anything that can help reduce risks to the dogs that swim, are some dogs more vulnerable than others.Cheers

clean well with Colloidal Silver, and then use Thornit.

Is that treatment rather than preventive. Sorry to appear thick :)

I think all ear infections should be seen by a vet.  Prevention wise I think you can do a lot by thinking about where the dog is swimming.  I try to discourage mine from swimming in our local canal, or still water generally, where I have known friends dogs to appear to pick up ear and eye infections but I am happy for them to swim in flowing rivers and lakes.

Hi again
the only place they swim is a professional hydrotherapy pool!

Hi Sue

Has previous posters have already said thornit is good.  All of my dogs swim everyday but I only have problems with Sacha and Cassidy, Briar & Oscar are fine, but I find using a small amount of thornit every week seems to keep their ears healthy. At the hydro pool do they use the floats that are available to keep their ears dry?, I have also used cotton wool in their ears in the hydro pool as this also helps.

My shepherd bitch swims every week at hydrotherapy and never has had any problems with her ears, I do routinely dose with thornit as a precaution maybe this has helped I dont honestly know, but a lot of my friends dogs also swim and they aint had a problem either

Hope that helps
