Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Drug to increase milk production??
- By LucyCanada [ca] Date 15.04.05 10:49 UTC
Hi,

Just wondering if anyone on this list heard of a drug to increase milk production??
I was suggested by someone a drug here called "Reglan" that they give to the bitch the last
two weeks before the whelping date. Last year my bitch naturally whelped a healthy litter of 7 puppies but had no milk. We just bred her again taking one more chance hoping she would have milk this time around.

Last year she was on raw foods and I was just learning to feed this and this time around I put
her back on Kibble to see if there would be a difference since I'm wondering if I might not have fed her all the adequate nutrition she needed to be in whelp.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Lucy

I would be interested to hear too, my bitch whelped 8 pups in December and didn't get a drop of milk, tried a few different things from the Vet, Dorwest and even went to a herbal remedy, but nothing worked!  She had a litter 2 years previous and had plenty of milk.

I forgot to add that the drug "Reglan" is used for treating nausea and vomitting in dogs and cats, a very popular repro vet in the USA uses this to ensure milk production but my vet hasn't heard of it. From my little bit of research on the internet I found that the drug "Reglan" is often prescribed to women who breastfeed and need an increase in milk production. But I need more info on this since I don't know how safe it would be to give, the dose and how long before the due date would be a safety barrier.

hi,
we had a litter of 7 at 57 days, and the bitch had no milk what so ever ,i always after a bitch has whelped take her for a oxytocin and a antibiotic jab,and never have before had a problem with a bitch having no milk ,but when i took her to the vets,my appointment was with a new vet who had just joined the practice and she would'nt give her any jabs, said not necessary, and was'nt particullary worried she had no milk,(this was her first litter),anyway 2 days went by and still no milk, and her pups to me, seemed to be fading, even though i was supplementing there feeds,so i decided to take her to another vet, told him the story so far and he immediatley gave her a oxytocin and antibiotic jab,the vet told us that oxytocin is a hormone injection and does help with producing milk and added i'd most probably never come across this problem because all my other bitches had been given the oxytocin, well from us leaving the vets office and getting into the car she was dripping milk, which of course was such a relief, all pups survived and no more problems occured during the rearing of this litter,i have changed my vet and always give my girls the oxytocin jab and had never had another problem.

My girl had 2 oxytocin injections and still no milk......she delivered one pup naturally then had the remaining 7 by c-section.

I also insist on them having AB jabs after whelping

Same thing here! We always have oxytocin on hand and I gave my bitch quite a few shots for two days, the milk should flow in within minutes but it didn't work! I always give oxytocin at the end to make sure there is not a puppy left in there.

Lucy Canada,

Reglan (metaclopromide) will help to bring in the milk (if anything will ;) )  I was prescribed it when my baby was born at 28 weeks as mothers milk is best and I had none, it worked very well, but it does take a few days to work fully, I took the tablets for a week ;)

Try this link for more information

If there is milk but it isn't sufficient Fennel Seed Tea will help to increase the flow.

Hope you never really need this information ;)
