Topic Dog Boards / Health / phosphofructokinase (phs deficiency)

my sister has a 2 yr old spaniel cross that suffers from phs deficiency. She was finally diagnosed after sending blood tests to USA as the hospital in Bristol was mystified evne though she had been admited twice there. We know it causes muscle spasms, internal bleeding and although not fatal is extremely distressing for the dog when she has an attack. She was having week long attacks for a while which then steadied out to the odd day or two but she had an attack about 3 weeks ago and hasnt recovered very well. Apart from pain killers there is nothingelse the vet recommends, can anyone recommend any help at all with this or have any experience with the illness .  All help appreciated

Do you mean PFK deficiency? The muscle spasms that you see are due to basic muscle weakness due to an interference in the ability of the muscles to produce the energy that they need to function properly. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this, but I think Oxy-Drops would help alleviate symptoms. They have the ability to maintain high oxygen levels at a cellular level allowing muscles to 'last longer' before starting to produce energy anaerobically which creates a lactic acid build-up that eventually shuts down the muscle by causing pain. People travelling in high altitudes use Oxy-Drops to stave off breathlessness and muscle fatigue.

Hi Stakemaster

Hi, Oxy-Drops is only available on the net, try nzymes.com in the US or first4pets.co.uk in the UK...it's a multifunctional product that can be used by people and pets...
