I am expecting my first litter in over two weeks, i have just ordered a heating pad from my vets, it cost £34. I tested it out but not to sure if i have made a big mistake, it only works if the pups are on it, it doesn't get very warm. My comcern is  it going to keep the pups warm, i tested it with an argos book on it but it only got slightly warm. I phoned the vet back about this and they ensured me that this is how this particular pad works. My breed is a CKCS, so i don't think the pups will be heavy enough to trigger the pad to heat up.

Any comments would be most helpful, i have 3 days in which to take it back, i think i will be anyway, put i would like to know your opinions

I have the metal heat pads inside fleece covers, they don't feel as though they get very warm, but they were good enough for my two litters of cockers over christmas!  You don't want to cook your pups after all ;-)

I know the pad you mean ...they are good they only heat when the pups lay on it..they are very cheap to run ALTHOUGH i prefer the argos ones..not much help really am I ??? would love to know when the pups are born I too own cavaliers ..

I put my pad under the floor of the  box so there is always something on it.  Mine does not get hot, just warm and the longer you lay still on it the warmer it gets but it dose not get hot, if they did the dog could get uncomfortable or burnt so warmth when laying on it is ideal.  Try laying a towel over it to reflect some heat and going back an hour or so later to see if it feels warm

I used to have one of these for the kittens :) they aren't supposed to get warm enough for you to notice, unless they are covered.  If you put a phone book/catalogue on one for ten minutes or so you should be able to feel a gentle warmth when you slip your hand under it.  I always kept them under flannelette sheeting and mummy cat could always tell if it was switched on or not, she would hog it if it was on and ignore it otherwise :)
