I have never been to a dog show in my life - watching Crufts on TV is the nearest I get to anything like that.  Now that we live not far from Edinburgh I would like to go along to Ingleston to a dog show, just to see what it is like.  Can anyone give me any info. on shows held there, do I need to buy tickets in advance, what can I expect on the day?  Sorry if I sound a bit dim.

Oh boy are you in for a treat! Dog shows are great fun.I don't know the venue you are refering to but it will hold either 'open' or 'championship' shows.
Open shows are usually on for  1 day(the really big ones are on for 2).They have less classes and less dogs and are more relaxed but are a good place to see a variety of dogs.
Champ shows are usually held over 3 days with different 'groups' of dogs being on different days.(eg hounds, terriers etc). The average champ show has an attendance of about 10-12 thousand dogs over the 3 days and the quality of dogs is usually better than at open shows in general. The other BIG advantage to champ shows is the stalls...you can buy anything 'doggy' from dozens of stalls. At champ shows dogs are 'benched' whilst not in the ring which means that people can walk through the benching tents and see all the exhbits close up....but please remember to ask before touching :d
Theres no need to buy tickets in advance...just go along and pay on the day.

The Scottish Kennel Club Champ Show, is held at Ingliston every year.  Show dates are
Friday 20th May         Hound/Terrier/Toy
Saturday 21st May     Working/Pastoral/Obedience
Sunday 22nd May       Gundog/Utility/Agility

Archer has said everything else, except, either leave purse at home, or bring plenty of money, I had to borrow a freinds credit card last year. I took xyz amount of cash and told myself this was my limit. Hah :D

I will be there on Gundog day Tia and Summer entered
