I caught Ruby (my boxer pup) eating snails today out in the garden

How many she ate I have no idea. Also she will eat anything thats lying
on the floor, wether it be a stone, bit of earth, moss etc etc etc.
She has been sick tonight!! Could it be she has overindulged on the old
escargot!!!!!! :D More important r they poisonous? If it is the snails
i shall have to do a snail hunt every morning as it is escargot city here> :(

Hi Ali, if you put snails in search you'll find a few previous threads to digest.

Snails also eat slug bait which is not good for dogs at all. JH

Most dogs have lungworm to a certain level don't panic.
This is the reason I recommend to my puppy buyers to keep using Panacur as it treats lungworms as well as intestinal worms. I use panacur at one worming then Drontal plus at the next that way I keep everything under control - I've yet to stop my schips from indulging in their fav delicacy but at least I know they're don't gonna become overrun with Lungworms.

Schip, I know that dogs in Ireland sometimes have problems with lungworm, but thought it was pretty uncommon in the UK, except the South West?
By dizzy
Date 22.05.02 17:37 UTC
i didnt think lung worm was common either, but snails are hosts, so if she eaten them worm her soon as possible, make sure its the one that kills them as they all dont!!!
im having a battle with snails too in my backyard, -im out at night with a shovel chopping them up

,although im lucky in the fact mine dont seem interested in eating them at all, :D

yes i put one in the empty dog run, and have got a few that way, but i could puke when i squash one full of beer, theyre like fat butter balls, sort of roll around under the shovel, its making me gag writing this,i had an awful ezxperience the other night-NOT AS BAD AS THE SNAILS!!!-i chopped one in half and before i got to squash it the end with the head -sucker thing on srarted to wriggle itself off, it was like something from a horror film,
they tend to make for the brick kennel with the spaniels in, weve a real old one that slops around his food dish, the snails have their supper in there,!!!!

After an experience with a slug while living in a damp ground-floor bed-sit I have no sympathy with the little *****. One kept leaving trails all over my carpet for a few nights running but I couldn't find it. It then climbed up my bed, did a little dance on my sheet next to my pillow and I woke up with it on my arm! I ended up with a nasty burn where it had been lying! It died a.s.a.p.!

Linda, that's gross, I think snails are quite cute (sad aren't I ) but I detest slugs, Sunday put bin bags out for collection and came in and found one attached to my T shirt, screams broke out, dogs ran round barking and slug was despatched at 100 hundred miles an hour across kitchen to be stomped on by 2 rotties, I still feel sick thinking about it, it was one of the horrible green ones

One of my puppy buyers had a very large vet bill when her puppy developed a sever Lungworm infestation and they live in London. Ever since I've advised puppy buyers of the risks to their new pups and how to avoid them.

My brother and his mate - aged 30 something shared a house a few years ago and they had a pet slug in the kitchen, no one would visit them in the end - luckily he got married and became civilised - was a Vat inspector at the time !!!

Thanks Schip. I've been using Lopatol which doesn't do lungworm, but I'll think about changing now.
By Schip
Date 24.05.02 18:22 UTC
I alternate, use Panacur one time then Drontal Plus the next. I usually buy mine at Crufts get 20 Drontal and 3 bottles of panacur 10% usually does for all my dogs and any puppies for the year.
I always used to just use the Drontal until this puppy 2 years ago - which is silly really coz I've always used Panacur for the parrots from the 70's onwards and had to do my own dilutions, you'd think grandad being a sheep and dairy farmer I'd have remembered the lungworm thing too durr lol.

The vet suggested that I alternate between the two. Presumably I worm her every 6mths from now on?

is this easily to give" panacur" being the puppie is on dried food do I put this on the dried food ,
Pat xx

If you use the liquid, then syringe straight in the mout. If the granules (works out more expensive) it is given on the food, but you do have to make sure it all gets eaten!! :D
By dizzy
Date 23.05.02 17:11 UTC
you can get it in a paste too- probably work out a bit more but it has measures on the syringe and its so easy and non messy to use,---i got about 5 og them last night in the beer pot! you could tell which one had been there longest, it was round!!

Am I right in thinking that Panacur is the only worming preparation available through the vets that gets rid of lungworm? Holly likes to eat snails and as she's due for worming I'd like to get the right product for her.
Thanks,
Fiona

As far as I am aware issymum yes.
The puppy involved in an infestation in London was in the vets surgery for 3 days they drained both lungs, did an endoscopy of the lungs, took swabs, shaved her chest and scanned her heart.
These vets had told her new owner that she'd brought a wonderfully healthy happy well balanced puppy only 2 mths earlier - but when she became ill they told her she was one of the worst dogs they'd had the miss fortune to have to treat. Poor family and myself were deeply traumatised by the whole affair as they said she would have to be pts due to heart failure etc and that they should sue me for their costs!
I did loads of research and sent her the Panacur to give her for 7 days to cure her, she then tells me that the vet had also given her the same 'just in case!' Yet he was the one who'd told them to use the Drontal not panacur as it wasn't good enough.
I hasten to add that this vet and his practice have had to settle a law suit out of court after this family had finished with him. They now want a 2nd bitch from my next breeding which I thought was a fantastic plus for me. They now give her panacur every 8 wks to make sure she doesn't get over burdend - seems it was easier than trying to get rid of all the slugs n snails lol.

Thanks Mandy, I've been using Drontal plus that was supplied by the breeder and today is the first time I need to get any from the vets.
Our garden is full of slugs and snails, we've never put any bait down because of the children and I don't want to start now just because Holly eats them.
I can now go to the vets full of confidence when I ask for Panacur.
Thanks again,
Fiona

You can get wormers on the internet if you want & there is no postage charge. Have a look at this
site it also tells you a bit about each wormer ie what each wormer contains and what worms they kill. :) Only thing i don't know what the prices are like for dog wormers because i found them as they are very cheap for horse ones!

Well I got my panacur, I wanted to get it from the vets the first time and then I'll get it online after that. I got the granuals, can I add them to Holly's milk or do they have to be sprinkled over food? Holly is fed on complete food so unless I soak her food when she has the Panacur I don't think she'd eat it all.
The vet was great and was very impressed that I knew what I wanted and why. 2 Brownie points to me I think :D :D :D

I found when I used the granules for the parrots that they just dropped to the bottom of their water containers and took forever to disolve. In the end we used to soak some pulses until they sprouted then added the panacur to that at least it stuck to the outside.
You can add a little meat to her complete for the granuals to stick to increases the chances of her actually eating it lol. Must admit the parrots taught me to use the liquid or paste with the dogs coz I'm a lazy so n so lol.

I've tried the panacur in her milk and it didn't work :( It worked in strawberry milkshake though :D :D :D Hardly ideal but I don't suppose 7 days every year will do her any harm.
Thanks,
Fiona
