Hi. Please could those of you experienced in export please tell me the criteria for exporting a puppy to the States? What vaccinations do puppies have to have ? Do they need to have rabies cover, and do they have to have one rabies jab then a titre test or 2 jabs and a test, or what ? At what age can you expect a puppy, medically, to be ready to go, and in your opinion is that an age suitable for a puppy to travel that far? Do they also have to be micro-chipped/tattood and are there any other medical procedures needed? Are there any airlines that would allow a puppy actually in the plane with passengers or do they have to travel elsewhere in the plane, and what are conditions commonly like for dogs exported? I have seen horror story Airline documentaries that show dogs sitting in cages on windswept run ways, apparently mislaid by airort workers or arriving in "arrivals" amongst the suitcases. :-( Also if I were to send a puppy to the States if I endorsed the reg "Not for Breeding" would that be honoured by the AKC when they applied for registration over there, or is it that once a puppy leaves this country there would be no control over whether any resulting puppies are registerable Sorry there are so many questions, but I would really appreciate the answers. thanks in advance. Phone Sue T she can give you all the details about exporting.

Of you contact DEFRA they will send you a fact sheet appropriate to the country you are sending to! I have exported to Poland and Australia, and requiorements varied a lot!

Westie Lover belive it or not I HAVE A bit of the se details as I was thinking about moving back to Canada next year ans had looked into a few things
Here are some numbers Pet pastport 020 8870 5960
some other org with info 0161 2234035
Shipping 01344 424 144
Also Westie pups can be taken on the plane of they are small enough and will fit under seat which I believe as pups in the correct cage can or the can go on the plane but in the cargo as excess baggage
Generally you only need the vac certificate and the health check letter from an aprroved vet and the DEFRA form from the Argrucultural minister which the vet signs and that is basically it..
Depending on exact location you don't need Rabies shot as we are known as rabies free.
I checked out all these details last month.. so I think it is current and up to date.
I also got some prices if you are interested..

PS I was also told by the CKC that when I re registered them with the CKC all of the same endosrment would be transfered over. you have to produce all you KC details befoe you can re-register them anyway..but you could e-mail the AKC ..that is what I did with the CKC

Thanks for the info, Pam. I phoned Andrew and he said that the puppies only need a health certificate and can go at 12 weeks. However if I did export a puppy I would definately have all the jabs done and have him micro-chipped. Apparently they just sent a puppy abroad further than the States and he bounced out of his box as if he had just been round the corner!
Hi, this is the first message i've posted so hope i've done it correctly.
I actually exported a puppy (rough collie) to Boston 2 weeks ago. The only requirement was the export health certificate that you can get from a vet qualified to do this (not all are). I shipped my puppy at 11 weeks as we were told that at 12 weeks the pup would then need a rabies jab! This would then mean the pup could not fly for at least one month! .
Puppies can fly from 8 weeks old (although I personally would not like to do this) Some airlines do allow pups to travel in with passengers if accompanied by someone, some do not. Each airline has its own rules about what they allow and what they require so if I were you I would have a chat with the airline staff concerned. All pets must travel in airline approved carriers (not hard to find but they MUST be of the correct size for the animal) There are strict guidelines on this! If you look on the web under exporting dogs, etc and on the airline site you will find out how to measure your pup/carrier.
It took me ages to find out all the info I needed but in the end it was a very simple process.
Our puppy also arrived safely and happy to be with her new family.
Hope this helps.

Hi.
When exporting to America it is worth knowing requirements can vary from state to state so it is best the new owner makes checks with their particular state.
Pups can go from 10 weeks and it is correct that if over 12 will need all the rabies stuff. All that is required for most states is a health certficate from you vet which must be obtained no more than 24 hours prior to departure. It does not have to be a DAFRA cert just a letter from your vet on headed paper and stamped.
Delta airlines are the only airline to allow the puppy to go on as hand luggage but think there is a weight restriction.
If someone is travelling on the plane then the puppy can go in the hold in a correct carrier and can be exported as the owners baggage allowance.
If no one travelling with pup then best go through a shipper. A good company is Skymaster. They operate from Manchester and will collect the puppy from your door so no need to go to the airport and try to find your way round all the freight terminals! :-). Skymaster also supply the crate for travel and the person who the pup is going to can pay them direct, which saves all the money exchanging over here.
We have sent three pups to our friends in North Carolina and they have all arrived well and full of beans!

hi there
could you email me some info on exporting as i cant find anything on skymaster on the web all info greatly appreciated

If you contact DEFRA, they will be able to send you a leaflet with the regulations and requirements for the country you want to export to. I have exported to Poland and Australis and these detailed sheets ensured everything was done at the right time, and things went smoothly.
