Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Retainded Testicle on GSD pup
- By Hollywood [gb] Date 13.04.05 10:52 UTC
Not sure if anyone can help me.  I have recently bought a German Shepherd pup and after the last visit to the Vet he tells me that the dog has a retained testicle.

If it does not drop by 24 weeks then he will have to have an operation to remove it.

Apparently I cannot breed this dog as it is a genetic defect.  Is this true?  Not really sure if I want to breed but it would be nice to have the option!

Comments?

Hmmm, all I will say is that vets have been wrong before now, you have plenty of time to wait it is not VITAL that if it IS retained that it is removed at 6 months.

Testicles are a bit like Easter, moveable ;)

A lot of male puppies have retained testicles until they are a year old & there is no need to remove the retained one until the puppy is a lot older

As to wanting to breed from your dog he should not be bred from before he has been X rayed & scored for HD & been tested for haemophillia

If the testicle does not descend you should not breed from him & you should tell the breeder & his mother should not be bred from again as she is the carrier of the gene for testicles
