Just wondered if anyone can understand this.My male is getting rather fruity with my female(she is spayed)The female has a little abscess on the top of her head and my boy just can't stop licking it which leads on to him wanting to get jiggy. The female will tolerate this for a while untill he tries to mount her back end(she does not mind if he pumps her head :) )sorry for the explaination but just saying it like it is.Why would he be thinking she is able to mate? She was spayed at six months and is now 2 1/2 he will not give her peace at the moment.

I've found that infections in others have this effect on dogs - my boys were beside themselves when one of the (spayed) bitches had an eye infection. In fact it was their behaviour which made me get the vet to check her eye! When the abscess is cured he'll behave normally again.

Thanks JG i was beginning to think maybe like my oh (has to be checked after five years make sure the tubes have not connected again)i was going to have to get her spayed again. Stupid women that i am.

When a bitch is spayed the uterus and ovaries are removed so no tubes to reconnect :)

As Isabel says, a bitch can only be spayed once because it's a full ovario-hysterectomy - the ovaries and uterus are completely removed, not just tubes cut.

Hi again, just thought i would ask again about my boy's funny behaviour.Do you think that he might be acting like this as my wee pup may be coming into season. My other bitch's (spayed) abscess has cleared up but he is still trying his hardest to you know what her.I have been watching my pup very carefully and she is never left alone with the male (no sign's of swelling or blood)But he has no interest in her at all just the older girl.
thanks

My eldest dog gets really confused when my pup is having problems with his eye.  It definitely has an effect on his behaviour, I've not known him to mount but he does show signs of 'pre-mounting' excitement almost.  Our pup has had three operations for entropian and often I have to separate them to get Charlie to leave him alone.

It sounds like your boy's got thoroughly confused! (Easily done - they keep their brains in their trousers half the time!)

That was not meant in a sarcatic way JG  it did make me laugh.just read it again and it came across a bit iffy(my post)What are the best signs to look for on my pup as to being in season? I am keeping her away at the minute just because of the way the boy is acting towards the other girl but there are no signs of season from the pup.Tha only thing that is different is the older girl will lick the pup's bits.Any advice

Ooh, don't worry, I never thought you were being sarcastic! :) :) My boys aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer when they get 'that idea' in their heads!

How old is your pup? If your older bitch is cleaning her up it's quite possible that she's building up for a season. The usual first sign is athe vulva gradually swelling - when you notice that it's a good idea first thing every morning, ideally just as she gets up after lying down, to press a clean white tissue against her bits. Eventually you'll see a hint of pink on the tissue. Then you know that she must be kept away from all male dogs for at least 21 days, probably nearer 28 to be on the safe side. Don't even let her into your garden without you in attendance.

Hope this helps.

Hi again, she is 7 month old(pup) i have been keeping her seperate since my boy started getting fruity with the older girl. Also have been doing the tissue test in a morn as the pup is now in my room (to be on the safe side i put her in a cage)Basically i have totally segregated her from the others well i let her out with the bitch in the garden and the  boy comes in.But as i have seen no blood or swelling  i am just a bit on edge thinking i am being a little overprotective and that i am seperating them at the wrong time,ie just cos i am expecting her to come into season now, i am keeping her away and that in actual fact she is not ready. But then again i am worried about these silent, bloodless seasons too.gosh it's hard i feel so mean when she is crying to get to the others.

It may be a little early - I've never had a bitch have 'silent seasons', and like you have only heard of them; I think they're very uncommon. As you know, the first season can be any time from about six months to about a year (my bitches have usually been at about 8 months) - I'm sure you don't want to be keeping her away from the others for another few months! (That said, it's a wonderful relief to come across someone who's being cautious, so you're to be congratulated!). I can't tell you what to do, but I think if they were mine I'd certainly let her mix at least with your other bitch, rather than being totally isolated. As you seem very responsible I'd let her in with both the others; just not leave her unattended with your boy.

Hello again well that is me just back from walking the pup and have an hour to spare. My house has been a clockwork of rotating dogs since i thought she might be in season(don't want any of them to feel left out)I just worry about letting her near my boy just incase the dreaded happened,(books i have read say dogs can mate through fences)I only mentioned silent seasons as i have read about them on this board.
That is exactly what i was trying to put across that i don't want to be keeping her away from the others for months just waiting to see if she is in season.I am not that good at getting my point across you see.
anyway thanks
i feel a little more reassured now that maybe i am being over cautious, but i will carry on checking her in the morning's just to be on the safe side
bye got two more to walk now

One-to-one walks and training when you have more than one dog is never a waste of time, so you needn't worry on that score. I think you're being very responsible - so nice to come across! Good luck!
