Can I suggest an alternative?
The severity of chastisement is measured by the receiver, not the donor.
Why do you feel the need to tell him off?
Perhaps a more fruitful partnership could be created by you praising him when he has done something that you want and ignoring inappropriate behaviour.
Punishment inhibits learning in both dogs and people...........
Dogs are not deliberately "naughty" they just do what works..........
I agree; take a look at the problems and try to solve them in other ways. For instance if he is chewing something, address it by using anti chew sprays or vicks or oil of cloves on furniture, keep the dog to one room and supply with stuffed kongs. Consider why he may be chewing, eg anxiety, teething if dog is a pup, etc. and if necessary get help. If there are any specific problems which are driving you mad, do register with Champdogsforum and get more help :)
