I recently bought a westie puppy and I was rather dissappointed to find that the kennel club documents I received were not particularly impressive, I had to pay £10 for the transfer of registration into my name, then a further £6 for a pedigree, neither of which are impressive documents, then £8 to add my affix to his name. That is not even beginning to touch on the affix document which costs £70 and a further £10 every year to maintain, and the document supplied is just a flimsy peice of paper, if you want to buy a frame for this bit of paper, you have to open your wallet once more and its not cheap, how do the Kennel Club justify these prices?
It would be understandable if you were getting a watermarked handmade paper certificate with gold gilt writing and a special seal or something, but these simple certificates take seconds to knock up on a computer and I really feel the Kennel club are just there to make money out of the dog owning populus.
Does anyone else feel this way? I do not breed so heaven knows what it must be like if you are a breeder, you have all the registration fees etc on top of that, I think the KC must be making an absolute fortune

If you dont breed why have an affix. If you have an affix you must have had dealings with the KC before. Its the fact that the dog is registered that matters, not what the registration document looks like - no-one sees it but you and perhaps your vet.

When they are registering so many dogs per year they need something that only takes seconds to produce :d

I don't think that they are bad really, at least with the KC ones they are more inclined to be detailing the real details of the dog, whereas the DLRC could be any dogs name or breed on there.

Must say I don't midn what they look like but think that they have obviously not consulted anyone about fonts styles and clarity.  You ahve large A4 certificates and quite tiny rather faint print.  No wonder people don't notice the health staus or lack of testing of the parents, and can't even remember the dogs registered name.

When I registered my two youngest with the Irish Kennel Club last year (had to send them my tattoo certs and chip paperwork too as well as KC docs), I was very impressed with the registration cerrificate which would look lovely framed.  They have embossed lettering, gilt etc.

As fr Affix maintenenance that is money for nothuing and a swizz at £20 a year.  I feel with the Acredited breeder scheeme it ia another £15 for nothing.  Affix holders shouldn't be charged as they already pay an annual fee to the KC.

Registration is only £12 per pup, transfer as you say is a negligible £10 (not a lot for legal ownership), and I write out my own pedigrees, so there's not that expense. The only major expense is the affix and the annual maintenance fee, but the pieces of paper are just filed away with the other 'dog stuff', not on show, so personally I'm not fussed about what paper they're on.

I wondered the same as you Fillis, why have an affix if you dont breed ?

Many peoplw who own mainly males like to have an affix to add to the dogs they own, so that yu can tell instantly that they are linked by their ownership.

They may in fact own succeeeding generations of males, but of course the affixes will be that of the breeder even though they ahve a whole line in the same way a bitch owner may.

They may be planning to breed later and want all theri dogs to be linked by a common affix.

They may have inherited and carried on a family affix.

Hi Sarstaff,

As Brainless has indicated some people like to simply "tie" their dogs (excuse the pun :D ) names together so that they are identified as belonging to the same owners.  We got our first show dog 15 years ago, within 7 months we couldn't resist adding to our number and so had two - both of entirely differently breeding and hence their prefixes had no link.  We had no intentions of breeding but decided to apply for an affix so that both dogs had a permanent "link" to us - as would any subsequent dogs.  Our third and fourth dogs were off a further two different breeders (although by then similar lines ;) ) but again our affix kept their relation to being of our "kennel" - which strictly speaking of course is simply our family home with all the dogs being much loved pets & sleeping in bed with us.  We have recently had our first litter - but had absolutely NO intentions of breeding at the time of applying for our Affix and have friends who have done so for similar reasons to ourselves.  Regards,  Teri :)
