Echo is doing so well I have to share it. When we first had him he was unsure about other dogs and would lunge, growl/bark and hackle up at any male we met. After a couple of nasty attacks by black labradors he went into defence mode if we saw one coming. Today we went up Corstorphine woods and met 3 black labs and a liver one, and he was so delighted with a pair of male black labs he dashed up the path to follow em :) It was nice to see him being cautious but friendly and after the disaster with my pals boxer, I was over the moon with him playing with a nice brindle - male again. Big Eck has been with us 10 weeks now and hes a delight to own. Still no room for complacency but hes doing us proud.

Great to see some results from your weeks of work, isn't it? Good for you both! :) :)

Really only 10 weeks - seems like I have known him forever. Pleased he is doing so well.

Well done Lorelei, Its these things that make everything else all worthwhile, keep up the good work :)

Hi Lorelei
How did you cure Echo of barking and lunging at other dogs? I have a 15month old GSD with this problem and would be grateful for any tips.
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 11.04.05 06:23 UTC
Same here Gaby, I put a post on here last week asking for help and sadly it has dissapeared. I've been following my behaviourists advice and charlies problem isn't getting any better.

Was it this one, spotty dog
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 11.04.05 07:25 UTC
No it wasnt, it was asking for advice on Charlies behaviour but someone mentioned electric collars and I think this is why it dissapeared.

Ah! That will be why, unfortunately that subject often ends up including potentially libelous comments that inevitably have to be removed.

spotty dog
Which behavourist have you seen? About to go down that road myself and everyone seems to think Angela Stockdale would be good. She is a long way away for us and would entail having to stay overnight in a hotel. Don't want to waste the exspensive treatment on one who's methods don't work. Lots of people have said she is the best in the country for agression.

>she is the best in the country for agression

Dealing with agression I hope :D

Right Isabel. Sorry for the error. Web does not have 100% attention at the moment. Gabi was spayed 10 days ago. She has her stiches out today and Gabi has had enough of the Elizabethan Collar (whats left of it). Whew!! will be glad to see the back of it and the crashing round the house and painful bumps as she tries to get it off by rubbing it on me.

No need to appologise, gave me a laugh. :)
Be lovely to get those stitches out and back to normal.  Don't they recover fast from these things, it would be 3 months off work for us :)

no it wasn't Angela Stockdale, I wish it was as I too have heard brilliant reports of hers. It was a member of the apbt, I'm not saying it isn't working just not yet. Think I may be expecting too much too quickly, it's only been 4 months.
- By gaby [gb] Date 11.04.05 10:53 UTC
You have been seeing the behavourist for 4 months or just following their advice for 4 months? I thought that if we are going down this route, might as well be the best. The nearby one that our vet recommends is actually dearer per session than Angela Stockdale. I figure that if Angela can't help then nobody would and we would just have to live with it. It is actually vital to our future plans that we get this under control as we would like to purchase a static caravan to spend most of our retirement in but I don't think we would be very popular with her as she is at the moment.

We saw the behaviourist 4 month ago and have been religiously following her advice since then. I have seen changes in the house with him but the dog agression is no better and I would go as far to say it is getting worse. I paid £95.00 for him to see the behaviourist which at the time I was thinking it would be worth it to have Charlie as "normal" as he could be but I'm now beginning to wonder. I'm going to contact the behaviourist again this week to discuss his progress and any changes that could be made as this way obviously isn't working.
We go camping most weekends in the summer and I must admit I'm not looking forward to it like I usually am. We have bought a trailer so we can take Charlies cage with us or there is no way I would take him.
I did have a look at Angelas webpage but we live in Newcastle and it's a long way for us to go with the dogs and arranging time off work and someone to look after kids. I still haven't ruled it out.
Are you booked up or just considering it?
- By gaby [gb] Date 11.04.05 11:46 UTC
I live in Liverpool so will be a long way for us too. I have put an email on to her to get a date. She recommended two sessions one day after each other. I have asked if she would be prepared to do it Sat afternoon and Sunday morning. If she is agreeable we would only have to stay one night in a hotel (she has dog friendly hotels to recommend) and then my husband would not have to take time off work. I am retired already so I am free anytime but I don't drive. The cost is £100.00 for 1 session and £175.00 for two. Waiting now on her reply with fingers crossed. Gabi is already well behaved in the house with no problems there. Just dog to dog on lead agression. She is super with people and children. She goes to training at West Lancs school and in class she is fine so long as another dog does not bark or growl at her. Off lead she does not have this problem and will play happily with any friendly dog. It does create a problem though as you need to approach people with her on lead to ask if its allright for her to play with their dog and with her snarling and barking whilst your asking, people look at you as if your nuts. I always have her on a 30 foot lead  as people are scared of her and I can't guarantee that she will come back every time.

Charlie has never been let off the lead since I got him (september) as he lunges and growls at every dog he meets. He is fine with dogs he has met a few times before although in the last couple of weeks he has went for a couple of them.
He has escaped off his lead twice and both times resulted in him going for other dogs and a hell of a lot of noise, no actual biting.
I know what you mean by the looks of other people, I get it every day in the park even though he's on a short lead and under control with his head collar.
At least once a week I think "I can't take this no more" but I'm still here struggling to come up with a solution.
I thank god that my other dog is well behaved and has shown no signs of agression.

Gabi is really weird. She will be playing off lead with a dog well known to her, but as soon as I put on her lead to take her home she will bark, lunge and growl at the same dog that she has been playing with. Something not right in the brain, but we are at a loss as far as knowing how to cure it.
