Picture this! Four year old virgin lab, rearing to go, standing, teasing, trying her hardest to get satisfied!
Three year old virgin male lab, hasn`t got a clue, wants to play, sometimes attempts to mount but slides off after a 'poke' or two. No penetration! My poor girl is so frustrated by him but is doing everything right.
He is calling everyday but it's the same thing every time. If we keep trying until she no longer is willing to stand, is there a chance that she might get pregnant? I've tried them in my garden and his garden. We first tried on day ten of her season and everyday since, and she stood for him the first time he arrived.
I have a twelve year old entire Yorkie who is trying his luck so have to keep an eye on him but will the smell of him on the bitch put the stud dog off? If so, what can I put on the bitch to disguise the Yorkie's smell? When the Yorkie was young, he was a stud dog and although we used him three times, he never tied with the bitch and the last time didn`t appear to enter her either! Three lots of pups arrived so he must have super sperm, but could we be so lucky with the labs?

3years is older than most dogs are when first used & he probably does not know what is expected. If his owner is an experianced stud owner I would have thought they would know how to 'handle' the situation, although I'm suprised he has not been used before. Jackie H

Hi Puddle, don't think that the smell of the yorkie will put the boy off at all. Two virgins together doesn't always work well. The dog thrusts, but its the female's job to get the target in the right place, so its a good idea if one knows what they are doing. Jackie's right that 3 is a shade older than ideal for a first time, but if the boy is showing willing at all, they may need some manual help in getting things positioned correctly. The other possibility is that they are getting too much help. I had a boy who liked to take his time, and was completely turned off by any attempt at holding or interference.

Can I ask ? were they on leads? as William would never mate a bitch on a lead or if you interfered in anyway,he used to mess a bout a lot then pin them in a corner (such a gentleman LOL) and once he mated he would let you turn him but not touch him at all before.
Also its better not to let the other dog mess around her as maybe it could be putting the young dog off.and if he keeps messing take her away for ten minutes then bring her back in never failed with wills when he thought you were pinching his bird :)

There is no intervention at all! No leads! Just a big garden for them to run in. If I held my bitch, the dog would stand waiting for her to run off, and when he was trying to mount her, if I went to 'position' him, he would slide off and stand by her side. My bitch is trying everything she knows to entice him, walking in front of him and pushing her butt in his face, crawling along the floor, pushing him into corners, pawing at his neck (this seems to get his attention, but could he be responding to a dominance thing?)
Short of sitting him in front of a doggy porno movie I'm at a loss!
His owners are not breeders, he is their pet and they haven't used him before, but I can't find another stud dog now as I wouldn't know who fathered the pups.

Most maiden dogs in my breed are "taught" to be handled and the bitch is firmly held so that she can't damage the dog. As he's their pet, I think that they may be very grateful in days to come, if he doesn't learn what to do!! :D
A thought has just crossed my mind, have they had him hip scored and eye tested?

Hi Puddle,
I had the same thing with my dog and bitch, when it came to mating them! My bitch stood, flirted, positioned herself, but although Norman mounted her, he kept just giving up and pratting around, and she ended up with the expression as if to say 'come on luv, get a move on, I'm missing Eastenders here...'
I thought that maybe she just wasn't ready, even though she was standing for him (they were both maidens). I went into the kitchen to put something in the bin, literally out of the room for only 15 seconds, heard a cry, went back in and there they were,'in situ' so to speak! Normie was just too shy to do it in front of me!!
I mated them over 4 days, and every time I had to go and stand in the kitchen like a gooseberry until they were in position, when he was then happy for me to 'help'.
Worth a try, maybe?
Good luck, Liz

the same here i would have to turn my back to let them get it ON and he would not do any thing if his owner was there, i tryed holding my bitch but she would sit down, i tryed helping him on and he just looked at me silly but after his owner had gone to the car for a few seconds and they could not see me (around a corrner) they just done it so we done it again 29 hours later and done the same and then again a day later and done the same and they were fine :D 9 puppies, the funny thing is that both had experiance (sp?) but them to together just did not like beening watches.

Ditto here. My boy found any "support"(intervention) a total turn off. We tried to help them for an hour and a half and we were so k*******d that we gave up. We had to have a break so let them loose in the garden. They played for a few minutes and then sorted themselves out and we had a very successful "natural" mating with a tie of 25 mins. Just the one mating as the bitch had come some distance but it produced the most wonderful pups.

My practice in future with my boys will be to let them get on with it. If it doesn't happen, it's not meant to be and that's the end of it.

This story has a strange touch of Deja-Vu about it. I have just spent the best part of a week trying to get my whippet dog to mate a maiden whippet bitch. He is 3 years old and this is his first bitch. The problem was that the bitch thought she was ready and gave all the signs but he knew she wasnt ready. The day she was right he mated her(16 days by owners reckoning). She was brought to the house last night and when she went home he sat on the window ledge and watched her get in the car and be driven away. He then spent the rest of the night on the window ledge crying!!! My Italian Greyhounds would have mated her anytime but then they would mate anything that has a pulse and stands still long enough!!!

A boy like yours is worth his weight in gold, if he won't touch a bitch until she is ready. the wam bam merchants always leave you wondering if the mating will take or not. I have used both types of dogs on my girls, and with the won't mate til ready boys have always had results!
