hi i purchased a 3 yr amazing large built red staff yesterday, and his general health is fine he is happy and lively but wont eat any of the dry food the lady supplied me but will eat some chicken off my drum sticks! or even some of the cat food! is he just pining or not quite settled in yet? also a slight area on his tail, about the size of a 20p the hair looks a bit shorter but not bald and i have been told by someone it might be linked to him not being studded?! he is full pedigree with a certificate of 5 generations so i might look into how to stud him. any help on any of the subjects would be appreciate. bud777.

Don't worry - that odd area on his tail is normal for a male, and nothing to do with whether he's been used at stud or not. In fact, if he's used at stud it's likely to become more noticeable because there's a gland there that secretes oil and a sexy (to bitches!) scent.
As for his food, he's probably very unsettled. (Remember your first day at school?) Put the food that he's used to down twice a day for 15 minutes. If he doesn't eat it, take it up and don't offer him anything else till his next mealtime.

From your post it would seem that your dog is 'pet bred' and has no KC registration. If this is the case you should not be considering breeding from him I'm afraid. Please do not take offence to this but there are THOUSANDS of poorly bred staffys out there in rescue and it is very irresponsible to consider adding to it.
Please read the first post on the breeding board.

Hi Archer,
he is actually Kc registered i have all papers and certificates etc and have just changed the details of ownership into my details. The Lady who owned him before myself was actually going to Stud him but was unable to look after him as she became ill.

In that case his 'proper' long name should be on his certificates.

well archer his proper name on all certificates is "ROJO" so i guess he dont have a long name and i assure you and anybody else who wants to be annoying and not helpful to me that he is of the best quality and not "pet bred" and he is kc reg and with 5 generations of pedigree 9 of which are championship winners, all his family have long parculiar names so just wondered why his name is quite normal.

If you have his KC registration certificate (the one that gets returned to the KC for transfer of ownership and returned) it will only have his KC registered name on it. This has to be at least two words long - 'Rojo' won't be it. It may well be that he isn't actually KC registered - what does the certificate actually say?

hi again he is registered cause i sent it off the other day, so i cant write down every thing that was on it but it had his name down with a gap in between which could explain the two word thing, RO JO, with a code in brackets next to his name and the same code next to the sire THUNDER BOLT BLUE and dam JODIES LITTLE PRINCESS, his name just seems short compared to most dogs. his breeder was mr s. wakefield from up yorkshire way i think, so if anyone knows of him could do with a contact number.

Hope you don't mind me adding to this, but my male Staff, who's 2 years old has a bald bit on his tail, which the vet has said is due to this gland. He's never been used at stud, but has had this since he was a year old. I've been told that the only way to get rid of this is to get him neutered, which I don't want to do. Is this true, or is there something else that can be done? Does this affect them for showing? Advice would be grately appreciated!
Thanks,
Sarah.

hi i heard that having them done can stop the tail hair from getting worse but im not sure if its true or not, also if you get them done he will not be allowed to be shown.

Hi Bud,
Thanks. I don't want to get him neutered as his temperament is perfect as he is, and I know that despite getting permission from the KC, he'd never get anywhere in the show ring. I just wondered if the judges would "mark him down" for having this bald patch on his tail.

Quite a few staffies get small bald patches, due to their bulldog ancesstors.
I am sure other staffie/bulldog owners could tell you more about it.
As for showing I am not sure, but I think it would poss go against you :-(
