I will be getting my puppy in 2 weeks, and was just wondering if the training pads are any good? Im going to keep him in a crate at night, with his bedding etc, but should i put a training pad in there aswell? or is there anything else that anyone recomends? any info/help would be appreciated!

I think you will find many for and against training pads I personally think they have a place.
I used them while my pup was crated but that was only for the initial first 2-3 days .
I only really used them at night or if I had to go out and leave her during the day but constant toilet training is the key and you will find all that info off another thread which is running at the moment.
Yes they do work.

i bought some training pads when i went down the shop when i got back i had to smile my baby had ripped the pads into little pieces so the next time i went to the shop i thought i would put her in her play pen and shut the door (the crufts freedem pen )before i got out of the front door she was out i cannot believe a tiny yorkie baby 5 mounths could jump out of there (yorkies rule)not saying your puppy will do that though rip the pads up ect but apart from that 1 instance i think there very good i l leave them out at night .
these pads worked quite well as unlike newspaper the urine didn`t seap through to anything under neath. However having trained my pups in different ways, its probably just easier to train the pup to go outside straight off than do the newspaper/training pad thing. However having said this, the training pads can come in useful for those early days. I`m sure I bought a plastic surround thingy to go around the training pad to help deter the shredding thing that some dogs do.
The hardest thing I found about the training pads was that my lad thought that he could piddle if his front two feet were on the pad. Apparently it didn`t matter where the rest of his body was. How do you correct that one!

Thanks. I am going to train him to go outside to start off with but i mean at night when he is in his crate. Thank you for your help!!
We still use them with our pup (16 weeks old) because we work and have to leave for a few hours at a time, I think most dogs catch on really quickly that when your there to open the door they go outside and if not they go on a pad, we got this great spray aswell that you put on the pad that makes them want to pee there, you can spray on newspaper, or the grass outside aswell and that seemed to work really well. And yes I agree the one problem is that the dog seems to think that just putting front paws on the pad does the trick, there is always an aiming problem!

our 11 week old pup had a little bladder infection acouple of weeks ago, and as I have to take him down 3 flights of stairs to the garden every time he needs to go, I bought some training pads and put one on my balcony for him. At first he thought it was a toy LOL, but after a couple of gentle corrections, and encouragement to do the right thing, he peed on it! (I think it helped that he already knew his pee-word)
It didn't really hinder his toilet training, he still goes outside and we've stopped using them since he got better :)
I'll probably leave him one if I have to leave him alone longer than an hour.
Re: the spray that makes them want to pee in certain places, it's cheaper to just collect a little bit of their wee and rub it in the middle of the pad ;) Also the pads already come impregnated with a scent that attracts them to pee on it, so you shouldn't really need the spray or the wee :)
Yes. I have used them for both of my dogs very successfully. You can get a frame that secures them flat so that the dog cant rip them up. It also means no newspaper print over your floor which is what I wanted to avoid!

Yes I use them with puppies, even though i train to go outside, very handy to have down indoors for inbetween and at night,as I do not crate any of my dogs.
Sheila.
We have 2 border collie pups just 9 weeks old. We use the training pads in the kitchen for day use. They only pee on them now using the garden for everything else. They use them at night which is a boon as they are easy to clear up. We started with paper but it is so messy. They do tend to pinch them and run with them but most of the time they use them. We do not get any accidents now. Thank god for better weather:-)

Nope. Unless you want to train your dog to pee in his crate/in the house.
Night time is a long time for a pup to hold itself. Some people will doubtless say that a training pad in the crate will help the pup -- not so. Getting your ass out of BED, going to bed later and getting up earlier, will help your pup learn the house training gig MUCH quicker.
It might SEEM great in the short term, but longer term, when you decide you dont want pup peeing in his crate each night, its going to be MUCH MUCH harder to stop.
