I wondered if anyone might be able to help.
I have a 9mth Staffie, her height is approx 12 inches and she weighs at last check 13lb 9 ounces.
I want to show her but I've been told she is a little tubby.
Im currently feeding her 100g of Burns with a slither of Naturediet just add some flavour.
I know you should feed 10g for every kilo they weigh and Im just wondering if Im under feeding her.
She doesn't seem to be loosing much weight now and she is always hungry. How can I get her weight down?
She gets enough exercise, I don't want to over exercise as she is still very young.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean 13 KG....13 lb is VERY light.
100g DOES seem very little for a growing pup...I would still be feeding 2 meals a day at this age and would be feeding more than that although I don't use Burns
At 9 months old it is no great crime for a pup to carry a couple of extra pounds...it will come off gradually with correct feeding and exercise.Don't expect a young pup to look like a mature toned adult...the judges won't!

Hi yes sorry I meant 13kg, Im not very good with weights.
Personally I think she is beautiful but when she has been too ring craft incomparison to the other pups she is very chunky and I've been told that she is over weight so should be on a diet..
As with all things Im trying to do it gradually rather than a crash diet.
Its quite difficult because my head is swimming from all the different advice..
I'll take her food up again and then just go from there, she is very much a bull dog type so is quite short and stocky, I'll just let nature take its course.
Thanks

The breed standard states....Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14 to 16 ins), these heights being related to the weights. Weight: dogs: 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs); bitches 11-15.4 kgs.
By this it would seem your bitch is a bit overweight...HOWEVER she is only a baby.By restricting her diet too much you could have a detrimental affect on her growth which will be much more of a problem than a bit of weight.
As I said I don't feed Burns so have no ideas of what quantities she should be fed...what is the recommended amount on the bag?
At 9 months old she should be having about 45 mins of walking a day.I would spend this 45 mins road walking and then spend some time during the day in the garden playing with a ball for extra exercise.
Its very hard without seeing your dog to imagine how tubby she is but at this age many pups carry a little weight and its better to take it slowly as you are than rush and starve her.She is just a baby....she has many years of showing ahead of her if you wish so don't rush things....enjoy her.
Have you shown her yet?
Archer
No Im showing her in May ahhh!!!
Very nervous! I just don't want to go there and look like we haven't tried, everyone seems very professional I'd hate us to get laughed at.
I have emailed Burns and they recommend 10g for every kilo so thats what I have been doing and I have mixed in abit of Naturediet for her.
If you have an email address I can mail you a picture of her :)
Thank you for all your advice, I've taken note as to be honest I know that you have alot of experience and know what your talking about.

Don't worry ...no one will laugh at you honest!! Most people who show are just there for fun and everyone had to start somewhere. If Burns has said 10g for every Kg then since you are trying to reduce her weight and you are adding a bit of Nature diet I would say its about right...however not all dogs require the quantities stated on feed bags since some have slower metabolisms. This is also a point where feeding guidelines come unstuck. If they are given according to dogs weight the more overweight the dog the more they will be fed if you see what I mean. At this point I wouldn't reduce it any further though.Be totally HONEST with yourself...how mant treats does she get a day? This is the usual source of dogs being overweight. Its amazing how the odd bit of bread, bit of biscuit etc add up.These treats need to be stopped and any training rewards should be taken from part of her daily feed amount.
I would love to see a piccy of your girl please ...I will pm you my email address.

Hi Nikki
I've sent you a pic of her!!! Not great picture but hopeully you will get some idea!!
Honestly honestly honestly she gets NO treats!!! Im so mean to her!!! She is really grumpy with me!
The only time she does get treats actually saying that is on Tuesday nights at puppy classes she gets 4 little hotdog sausages cut up into pieces and thats it.
We have to take her in a different room when we are eating of she is a nightmare...she is a real greedy guts she she gets the chance, but the last month I have been really strict with her food intake.
Thanks again! :D

Hot dog sausages?? Nooooo!! Don't give her those!! I used to use them all the time for my agility girl, and she put on weight like crazy! ...Look at the fat content in them, the ones that I got, per 100g I think about 90g was fat!!
What about cutting up some chicken for her? Or something else that isn't as fattening..
My girl loves peas and carrotts as treats!! Great for helping to lose weight :)

Really? Herta's are 30g/100g, so perfectly all right.

Yeah, sorry that's what I meant... there's 30g of fat in 100g, and 300g in a packet... = 90g of fat!!
Oh god what no more hot dogs!!! Now she is going o be really mad with me!!!

Hey, Blondiflops, you know you're going to have at least one person there to support you!!!!! :-) And she is a beautiful girl!!
TT
Thank you Tracey and Nikki!
Im sure once the first one is out the way I'll start enjoying it!!
No laughing though Tracey!!!Especially if I stack it!! Im very accident prone!!! :D
our Giorgia is a year old and from being the runt of the litter she has turned into a long legged/long faced type beautiful Staff. She is a little overweight but as she is still growing I'm not to worried. So enjoy her and love her and dont worry too much!
best of luck
Thank you Coleystaff, its just when I see all the other pups at ringcraft she looks really dumpy!
I thought maybe I was doing something wrong with her and that I was really overfeeding her or something.
Phew...sign of relief!!
We went to a show when Giorgia was about 6 months old and there was a white staff there, the same as Giorgia and it was so skinny it looked ill, in fact I didnt believe it was a Staff, it was awful. So it is obvious that dogs mature at different rates depending on their height and their genes I suppose. I also wonder if there is a tendency for show dogs to be a little on the slim size compared with 'house' dogs, a bit like models. We wont breed or show Giorgia even though she has a great breeding line, champions all the way down the line, she is too much a baby to us and it doesnt feel right for us
