Just being placed at a champ show where CCs are on offer should mean that the animal is close enough to the breed standard for its offspring to be registered. Anything much stricter is throwing the baby out with the bathwater, especially in numerically weak breeds, where there might be only one or two new CC winners each year, with others getting too old to breed from, but still being shown and winning.

The dark
My friend has an 9 month old german shephard that has a weird looking face, slightly disfigured, should this dog be destroyed because it doesn't look the same as all the other german shephards? He would never be showed as he would never get anything for it, but he is the sweetest dog.
Surely the nice things about dogs are their imperfections, its what makes them. If every dog came from the same gene pool, I could see a world of dogs that all acted the same, life would be pretty boring...
- By Tessies Tracey Date 06.04.05 08:30 UTC
surely if UK adopted the same breeding laws as Germany, they would have to operate the same Breed Specific Legislation Laws?
That would pretty much rule out breeding from staffies anyway?
I'm not a breeder, and quite a novice at owning a staffie (3yrs) but agree that far too many litters are just being 'pumped' out for profit......!:-(
- By thedark [gb] Date 06.04.05 11:43 UTC
Since i own a breed that origionated abroad JG I wouldnt agree no.
The problem is that the rescue centres are backed right up and many of these animals are crosses that will never find homes. The ones that do find homes are leaving a pedigree dog in a breed rescue somewhere, miserable. If crosses were stopped from reproducing thruough spaying the lot of them.

I have owned crosses, many of them, all nutured at the age of 5 months  before seasons etc and so as not to add to any problems. My vet was very happy with the situation and the dogs all lived long into their teens. However, i wouldnt never own another cross now, not even an Akita cross.

Maby i am prejudice, not that i care what your opinions of me are. To want to rid our country of unwanted crosses in rescue kennels is such a terrible thing, i agree whole heartedly.
- By Anna [gb] Date 06.04.05 11:56 UTC
Yes and then some stupid person with two lovely pedigrees would accidently let them get together and then hey presto we would have crosses again :-(
- By thedark [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:01 UTC
And if it were a legal requirement thats the offspring from this were spayed if allowed to be born (though preferably the "morning after" injection would be given) it would end there.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:07 UTC
And who polices these laws, to ensure that all these pups are neutered at the right time?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:00 UTC
It seems as though your professed support for the vulnerable native breeds (that people should be forced to buy if they want a dog) only extends are far as it doesn't affect your choice of dog. Seems a bit dictatorial to me.
- By thedark [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:01 UTC
You would know all about that JG.
- By thedark [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:09 UTC
And so it goes on, rund and round and round.
Im going out now. Got an appointment i really can't miss.

I really cannot waste any more of my time with you "people".
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 06.04.05 12:13 UTC
Don't go yet! You haven't explained how these new laws will be enforced!

Thank goodness for that, we don't want to get accused of using your 'valuable time' do we  :-)
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 06.04.05 16:00 UTC
Thedark, if you think you can tell what a dog is going t obe like by its breed then you ought to have a word with my boss bitten badly last week by a ... golden retriever. Hardly the dog with a reputation for being savage! THis was also a breeders dog. All dogs lives are valuable, they didn't ask to be born, anymore that the hundreds of children who through no fault of their own end up in foster homes, or waiting for adoption. But we aren't asking for them to be humanely pts are we!?!
- By ana_x [gb] Date 06.04.05 16:37 UTC
thedark..

What really annoys me, apart from the fact that you have something against ALL crossbreeds and stupid ideas, is the lack of respect you have for the people on this forum and the way you refer to them as "You People" all the time. I've learnt a lot from them the past few years, and they deserve a bit more respect than that.. come on! :)
- By thedark [gb] Date 07.04.05 07:12 UTC
In a survey done a few years ago on dog bites, top of the list was the lab, i think the goldie was about 6th if i remember correctly. So yes, i do think i can expect them to be savage.....
- By tenno staffs [gb] Date 07.04.05 07:50 UTC
I think lab bites are only so common as there are more labs than any other breeds.

A very valid point, and one often forgotten.
:)
- By thedark [gb] Date 07.04.05 08:23 UTC
So nothing to do with bad breeding, not having their exercise needs met, lack of stimulation in the home and general lack of understanding of the breed yet everyone wants one?
- By tenno staffs [gb] Date 07.04.05 09:15 UTC
Fair enough thedark, but that can be said for any breed.

Some are badly bred & not looked after correctly & some come from great breeders & go to good homes.

I have know nasty dogs of all breeds, but most of them toys. Some of my mums yorkies would be put to sleep if they were big dogs!

There are also 2 tiny dogs down my road which scare the life out of my staffie.

Maybe there are more badly bred labs than most other breeds as so many people want them & people just breed any bitch to any dog to make money :-(

I dont know it is just a thought
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 07.04.05 09:22 UTC
None of those are the fault of the breed, thedark, more down to the owners' bad management.
:)
- By maysea [gb] Date 07.04.05 09:32 UTC
i agree bad owners not socialised properly.

Dog aggression is any behavior meant to intimidate or harm a person or another animal. Growling, baring teeth, snarling, snapping and biting are all aggressive behaviors. Although aggressive behaviors are normal for dogs, they're generally unacceptable to humans. From a dog's perspective, there's always a reason for aggressive behavior. Because humans and dogs have different communication systems, misunderstandings can occur between the two species. A person may intend to be friendly, but a dog may perceive that person's behavior as threatening or intimidating. Dogs aren't schizophrenic, psychotic, crazy, or necessarily "vicious," when displaying aggressive behavior.
- By thedark [gb] Date 07.04.05 10:10 UTC
Ok, so, since these breeds are over bred, and arent always placed int he best homes...

Surely a 200 litters per breed limit would be beneficial?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 07.04.05 10:15 UTC
So every bitch in numerically small breeds could have a litter (no matter what quality they are), and about 1% (if that) of numerically strong ones?
- By thedark [gb] Date 07.04.05 10:42 UTC
So make sure they are cc holders or its equivilant in FT? Not that difficult. But then you are very trying arent you JG?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 07.04.05 11:08 UTC
I'm certainly trying very hard to understand you, thedark! ;)

Once again, by limiting the gene pool to CC-holders (and their equivalents) you're dooming breeds to extinction.
