Click when the dog is doing what you want it to do, not after :)

Ignore the dog if it does it wrong don't tell it off or say no, let it decide for itself

If you don't click, forget about it.. don't click afterwards or at the wrong time or you'll confuse the dog
yes, dont leave your clicker where your dog can get to it, our puppy westie chewed ours!!
Several really:
Dont click to call you dog just because he reacts to the click (yes there are people who do it)
Never click and not treat as the clicker will lose its power
Also try to click at exactly the time the dog is doing what you want it to i.e. bum on floor for sit etc.
Don't rush the dog and try to progress in small steps, the dog will learn quicker and it will be better reinforced.
I'd definitely recommend doing some reading before you "click" unless you have someone to help you :)
A great book with excellent clear colour photos (one showing a whippet being taught to retrieve, one of my favourites!) is "Clicker train your dog" by Karen Pryor. Hardback under a tenner.
Have fun - clicker training is great fun and you and your dog will enjoy!

I have just started using a clicker with Moss, I started by using a hand signal for sit without saying a word and when he sits he gets a click and then a treat then after a while he started to automatically sit. Then i did the down hand signal and wait till he goes down then he gets a click and treat. Another thing i've done with ollie is get a mat and put it in the middle of the floor when he put a foot on it click and wait for him to offer the behaviour again, now he lies on the mat and i throw the treat of the mat after i have clicked if i dont call him he'll go running back to the mat.

Thank you all for your advice.
Ellie is spot on with her OB but is becoming bored that is why I thought I'd introduce something new so this sounds about right.
