Hi
I am hoping to get a Rotweiller puppy in June but would like some advise as to whether it should be a male or female. I have an 11 year old male staffie that has been castrated and not sure what would be the best sex to get with him.
He used to have a male dog for company and was fine with him.
Any advise would be helpful.
Thanks
Sarah

If you have never had a rottwieler before the breeder will advise you to get a bitch as the males are quite strong willed and dominant you have to be firm or they will rule the roost bitches are more layed back and sweeter  also you have a male so best to get a female  good luck frank

Thanks for the advice and that is what the breeder has suggested. There are also a couple of Rottie owners in the park and they have all reccommended a female for that very reason.
I am also thinking about the future and if I have children, a female will be a little more laid back.
Thanks

Hi

We are also getting a Rottie pup later in the year we have just lost our 14 year old Doberman.

We were also concerned like yourself as we have a 3 year old Border Terrier male and wondered what sex would be best. After visiting the breeder and meeting her dogs we have taken her advice and are also getting a bitch.

Good luck with your new addition I am sure we will all have interesting times ahead

Good luck with yours too?
When are you planning to get yours? At the moment, I am trying to find out about hip scores, if you have any information that would be helpful, I would really appreciate it.
My dog that died was a cross breed from a rescue centre so I did not have the problem of finding this information out.

Hi Sarah

The breeder is hoping to mate her bitch in May so our pup will be ready around September.Seems a long time right now but I am sure it will be worth the wait.We also asked about hip scores and were told both hips are checked individually .Then the scores are added together lets say right hip 4 and left hip 5 the total hip score would be 5+4= 9 We are told the Kennel club say the average score for Rottie hips should be 13 while the Rottweiler club say up to 20 is ok.
So basically the lower the hip score the better, just be careful if one of the parents has a hip score of 3+15=18 although the score is under 20 it could have a problem with one hip.

Hope the above helps any problems get back in touch when do you hope to get your pup I think taking time to ask questions and finding out all you can about the prospective parents will reduce any problems we may encounter in the future

Good Luck

Pete

Hi Pete
Thanks for the answer. My pup is due to be born any day now I hope to bring her home at the end of June.
Parents hips are 7:7 and 3:3, so I think that is not too bad. Obviously, I won't exersice her too much in the first year or so to avoid any potential problems later on. The breeder told me not to let her off the lead for the first year so she can't run around doing damage to her hips
The only other problem we have is coming up with a name for her.
Thanks
Sarah
