How to you manage to command your dog to be quiet during a barking session. Reason ask as i have a 167 mnth old labrador bitch called Jess. Jess can see through the front door and any movement in the surrounding area of the house she barks at not for long. I know that's what she should be doing but want to be able to control the barking in some way.
My main concern is her barking at the neighbour when Jess is in the garden or hears my neighbour go out their she barks at her, her heckles are up as well. I have tried training discs but they did not work. I think Jess also remembers when she was younger that this particular neighbour threw water over the fence at her to stop her barking. The neighbour has tried to talking to her, and ignoring her but Jess still barks at her. I don't want to end up with the council getting involved as have read some of the topics already posted.
Any suggestions?

Is your neighbour a bit funny ref the throwing water over her ?
If they are ok then try some more socialisation to get her used to them :) Try some treats as this is a sure way of gaining a Labs attention and distracting from the problem :)

ps I assume she is 16 or 17 months old :)

My neighbour can be odd - sometimes speaks sometimes won't. & yes she is 16 months old - the dog that is.
We taught our dog to speak on command as he drove us nuts barking when his meal was prepared, getting ready for walks etc. When he speaks he barks till I say HUSH. Try it inside or away from your neighbour at first. A clicker is useful for this. The other thing I wonder is what Jess does in the garden? Is she playing with you or with a toy herself or digging? Ours is only allowed in our garden supervised as he could jump the fence, and a barking rammy in the garden always ends with me bringing him inside - he dosent bark outside (much) as Im usually out with him either playing or pottering so dosent need to raise the troops when another dog walks past.
we have an 18month old westie, and have basicly have the same problem. He only ever barks at one set of our neighbours.
Again the neighbours are a little strange, and also have their grandchildren over, who like to tease him by flashing a torch at him, or banging on the bedroom window.
Then they have a cheek to say, can your dog stop barking!
We've tried a few things, but we just cant get him out of the habit. Every times he goes out in the back garden now, he looks straight up to there bedroom window and starts barking.
i look forward to some of your replies to see if we can also put them to the test.
Good luck.
