Hi
My american bulldog is 4 and a half months old.
He weight 2 stones ive been told he is under weight is this true?

Im currently feeding him on blackwoods dry food 3 times a day he doesnt seem 2 go mad or anything for it but does eat it.Today i mixed his blackwoods with tuna and the dog was going mad for it and ate it in 30 secs exactly and was licking the bowl.
Is it okay to mix his blackwoods dry food with tuna or any other meat as my mum is a butcher?

Many Thanks Max

Hi Max
I always added tasty food to my dogs food (autarky ) like kippers, sardines, pilchards (in tomato sauce) raw, boiled or scrambled egg, raw mince etc.  BUT I think she was as least 6 months old before I tried this. Have you tried pedigree puppy food, just a 1/4 tin 3 or 4 times a day in his meals?
can't help with knowing what his weight should be though.
sorry I can't be of more help to you

Hi Max, Sorry cant help on the weight as not my breed. But yes you can feed tuna with his meal occasionally. I feed oily fish twice a week.

As your mum is a butcher, I would certainly use her in sourcing meat :D  but I would not feed commercial and raw at the same time as they have differing digestion times; if you wanted to keep commercial food I would feed raw at one meal and commercial at another. All meat should be fed raw, beef mince should be frozen and thawed before feeding. A raw egg twice a week is an excellent source of protien and calcium. A tablespoonful of Natural Bio Yogurt over his kibble may encourage him to eat as well. :)

I must admit, I have never heard of Blackwoods

If that was my breed I wouldn't think the pup underweight, but have no idea what size your pup is.  Can you see all her ribs and backbone?  You should be able to fel them easily under a light covering of flesh and just feel the backbone, but it whouldn't be prominent.  The back ribs should be easy to se and feel,a nd there should be a definite waist.

As with people one person will weigh more than another and both be the correct weight for their build and height.

As rtegards additives to the food.  Think about it If I gave you something scrummy like gateux (if you like cakes :D) or a second helping of meat and veg  I would go mad fthe cake, doesn't mean I need it :D .
