Hi all i am new member and new mum to a 10wk GSD we have had her 3wks and the toe biting not forgetting the trousers leg covered/bare is getting out of hand i appreciate any tips on how to handle this or is it a gsd thing as i have heard that they are quite naughty dogs .

Hi doris,

It is really just puppy behaviour and to be expected at this age, although they are quite 'big' puppies and hurt when they playbite.   Our GSD weighed 2 1/2 stone when he was 12 weeks old and was quite big and the vet couldn't believe he was only 12 weeks old because he was so mature.   I used to have bruises all up my arms when I groomed him because he would insist on grooming me at the same time, so I started taking him a walk and grooming him in the fields and he stopped doing this because he was too busy watching who was about.

They are beautiful dogs and I am sure she will grow into one of the best friends you have ever had if you just give her the time and some training maybe, they are my favourite breed of dog and I love them.

GSDs are no more or less naughty that any other breed as puppies

If you do not want to be nipped or mouthed try  two things offer a toy instead of of your hand or arm & walk away out of the room & ignore the behaviour

Older dogs will tolerate a lot more from puppies than older dogs & when the play/behaviour gets too rough they will walk away

Don't yelp or shout, a firm no & then walk away is the way to try

hi i have had german shepherds for over 30 years you have to be firm otherwise they will dominate you. its puppy being playfull. just said no and walk away once he realises he has lost your attention he will stop it. offer a toy but they love human companship unfortunately and this type of behaviour is to be expected with any puppy whether large or small. Your the boss demonstrate it.

Hi, i had this problem with my staffy pup i got him when he was 6 weeks old and now he's 16 weeks, when he bites us we tell him very loudly NO, and the playtime stops. Also get him plenty of toys to chew, i found that this works very well  i know yours is a different breed but i think all puppies are the same with the biting. Hope this helps. Take care and good luck. x

Hi, my GSD was the same. I think she was 5 months old before we got it under control. The ignoring and no play every time works, eventually. Lots of patience required!! All worth it in the end.
