Topic Dog Boards / Health / How much should I feed her?????
- By goat Date 29.03.05 18:36 UTC
We went away and had to leave our lab with a pet sitter, when we picked her up we were shocked to see how much weight she had put on.  I am not sure what happened but I think she was given to many treats and not enough exercise. I feed her Burns Adult Maintenance, she is 10 months old and weighed over 30 kilos this was at last weigh in a few months ago but she is big for her age so I am told.  Before I took her to the pet sitter she was having a cupful of burns in the morning and a cupful at night.  I am not sure whether I am giving her too much now but on the back of the burns pack it says for dogs 30-40kg give them 300-400kg.  Can anybody tell me how much I should be giving her at this stage???
Thanks

not sure how much you should be feeding her as some foods you give different amounts,I dont feel qualified enough to comment.
what I will say is that from what I'm led to believe  labs are prone to weight problems so you need to get this sorted if I was concerned about her weight   I would take her to the vets to be weight correctly in my vets this is free and get advice on the said amount because some food companies do sometimes tell you to give more than is required.

If it's any help, I have a 2yr old doberman male that weighs 28.75kg.  He is also on the Burns adult maintenance, and he gets 1 + 3/4 cups morning and night.  As you have a lab (bigger build than dobes, and my boy is dinky for his breed too), I would think around 2 cups twice a day or a little more would be close to what she needs - obviously talk to the vet of course, just my thoughts on this.  I also have a 21 month rott X bitch that weighs 28 kg, she is on 2 cups twice daily.  She is also a LOT more active than the dobe - remember to factor in activity and breed when you're looking at amounts to feed (labs are prone to weight gain).  oh, and treats, of course :)

Also, trial and error - it's taken me this long to get the amounts right for these two, the dobe was 6 pounds overweight until recently!

See what the vet says, hopefully now your girl is in your care she should go down (if she's over).  and you aren't alone - I had a customer a couple weeks back (I am a groomer) with a severely obese cavalier - turns out she'd been posted elsewhere in her job for a few months and the pet sitter had fed him on nothing but bonios!

I would say she appears very overweight from what you have said - you say she weighed over 30Kg at 7 months old (approx)? - my Mal bitch weighs 33Kg and stands approx 24" at the shoulder (and she is a fair bit bigger a lab bitch) Run your hands gently down her sides, can you feel her ribs?

I generally fed about 1/2 to 2/3 of what they recommended as I found mine put weight on far to quickly otherwise (I now feed them raw).
