what hip score scould a bullmastiff be

The best hip score would be 0/0 and worst would be 53/53. The breed mean score is 27, that is the figure for both hips added together. So if I were you, I would be looking for both parents, of any puppy being considered, being less than 27.

The Median score (what the highest number of individuals have scored) is 22, so I would ideally be looking for something around that figure with the Mean of 27 as nearly the maximum.

Also it is better for a dog to have even scores rather than one bad hip and one good.for example a hip score of 18 would be ok if the scores were right 9,left 9 BUT if the scores were right 1,left 17 it would not be acceptable....hope that makes sense

That situation could also imply the bad side had been injured, and wasn't that bad due to genetic factors ...

Could...but not always.I purchased(when I was young and stupid :D)  a pup from a sire who had odd hip scores...the pup developed the same problem and by the age of 12 months was diagnosed with having very little socket at all on one side....IMO its just not worth the risk unless you personally know the breeder and trust that the score was down to trauma

I have a friend whose score was this and it was due to an accident !!  So you need the full history.

To date I've only scored three dogs although number 4 (still a puppy, bless) will be done in a few months or so.  I asked my (previous) vet some years ago when scoring my first dog who was by then 3 years if his age was likely to affect score and was told no because the individual points/areas assessed are distinguishable from both age and trauma causes when evaluating each joint.

I've not looked into this further (good scores - didn't see the need ;) ) but I have heard several breeders say score as close as possible after 1st birthday (due to wear and tear as dogs become older) and others lay the blame of high scores against possible injury    I wasn't impressed with this original vet for other reasons anyway so left that practice but don't know if his info was accurate.  I'd be interested to hear other views or if anyone is really up on the hard facts of scoring?

Malcolm Willis at a seminar said that the inheritance of HD is bilateral and anything more than a couple of points diffeence in the two hips would be environmental factors.

A freind Hip Scored two sisters from same litter anf one scored something like 20 in one hip and other side was about 3, the siter scored something like 3/4, and his advise was to breed from the high sided bitch.  All ehr offspring have scored somewher5e like her sister, and one has a 0/0 score (only the second in the breed).

Studies in the US of unilateral dysplasia in a large breed found that it was almost enitely found in Pet homed dogs who were given littel excersise and confined for the greater part of the day, and then had short periods of energetic play.  This was considered to be damage.
