My mum's 6 month old Briard puppy is quite ill, and no-one knows why. Since yesterday morning, he has become very lethargic and just sits or lays. Is not eating or drinking and has had no vomiting or diarrhoea! The vet saw him yesterday and said he had a high temperature, and did not want to give him any medication as it may mask some condition. This morning mum took Jed back because he was no better and they took some bloods. They were all fine, except his cholesterol was high, which the vet put down to not eating and was not concerned by any of the results. He gave him an injection to bring his very high temperature down and said to see how he was over the next 4 hours. After lunch his head started shaking (like when you are very cold) and his pupils constricted and fixed, so mum rang the vet back, and at the moment he is hospitalised!!!

Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone, the more help and advice the better!! My mum and dad are beside themselves because their 2 1/2 year old bitch nearly died from bloat last November.

Hi Julia. Sorry to hear Jed isn't very well :(
Can't help with his symptoms I'm afraid, but I do hope he makes a speedy recovery

When blood testing have they checked for thyroid levels?
As thyroid malfunction can cause lethargy and also high cholesterol levels.

High temperature can indicate infection, as I'm sure everyone knows.

Sincerely hope that the vet can bring Ked back to good health again.

Thank you all for your concern and kind words (I have passed them on to my mum). Jed came home yesterday afternoon after being on a drip for 24 hours. The vet gave him a thorough check up and said he had a virus, and the head tremor and eyes was due to his extremely high temperature! He is much better now, but Mum is now concerned because my Aunt (who has 2 Irish Wolfhounds), has experienced the same with her youngest and she was diagnosed with an infection in the hip joints. Jed has been having meticam injections from the vet, and Briards are prone to hip displacia. I suppose she will have to wait and see, but at least he is out of the woods and ok!
