Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / What should I look for?

Hi, I'm off to look at a couplde of pups today for my sister in law. (Cavalier King Charles) I got their details from the Kennel Club Website so are ligit! The mother is there to view and I take it that it was a stud dog. (I'll ask about him!) Anything I should look out for, questions to ask as I'm not familiar with that breed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

Good luck !
I would ask to see eye and heart certificates for the mum and dad

The Kennel Club do not Vet breeders the only thing the listing tells you is that they breed less than five litters a eyar and the pups are KC registered.

Do ask about Heart and eye tests and don't accept anything less than theat they are tested.  Contacting the breed club to ask about teh breeder (if they are known to them in a good or bad way) would be a good idea.

David - you say that you are looking at a couple of pups - be aware that a lot of breeders will not let you have two pups together because it is very difficult to (1) to develop a good bond between the new owner and pups (they will bond with each other) and (2) it is four times as long to train 2 puppies as 1!!   Believe me - I know - I kept two of our own puppies, and certainly wouldn't keep two together again (although I certainly wouldn't be without either of them :) )

If, on the other hand, you are looking at two different litters, be aware that most breeders would prefer you to look at only one litter per day - you really shouldn't go from one to the other because of the possiblity of infection, etc.

Good luck with your search.

Hi, what I meant was that I was going to a breeder who had 2 dog puppies, my sister inlaw only wants one. I will ask about testing and requet to see their certificates. I know about having 2 pups too. I had two shelties only 3 months apart, very hard work!!

Hi David,

Definately ask about testing as others have said, but also look closely at temperament. Mum should be happy for you to be with the pups and pups (obviously depending on age) should be confident and happy to be handled. I don't think temperament is often a problem in Cavs but still something to consider.

Good luck,
Jen
