Topic Dog Boards / General / Cheeky names for a girl
- By Alli [gb] Date 29.03.05 14:17 UTC
Hi all we are currently thinking of names for our new babies and we would like to stick with a theme. We have at the moment decided that a few puppies will be called ********* Saucy Poacher, Poachers Minx, Poachers Peril, Sassy Poacher but we need a few more ideas as we have to have 12-14 including alternates. I'm looking to keep the theme along the same kind of lines as above. I would also love to call my one boy 'Notorious Poacher' but it's too many letters so if anyone has an alternate idea for this I would be very appreciative.

Oh the joys of picking names. It would be much easier if we had a split of boys and girls, but as we only have the one boy it's really difficult.
Thankyou all for the suggestions they have all been added to the list and we will work our way through them this evening :D

Poachers Artful Dodger!

Would love to have that as a name, but it doesn't fit with my affix as well :(

When you say  'Notorious Poacher'  has too many letters I assume you mean when combined with your affix so how many letter can the name have 8? 7? as well as the word Poacher

Poachers Tipple
Poachers Mate
Poachers Promise
Twilight Poacher
Poachers Target
Poachers Bounty

My affix and poacher together with the space in the middle is 17 letters so that only leaves room for 7 characters and as one is a space names with 6 or less would be good!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.03.05 07:09 UTC
Have they changed the rules? Spaces used not to count.
- By Teri Date 30.03.05 09:12 UTC
Hi JG,

I know that spaces have been included in the characters counted for at least the last 15 years (which was the first time I had any input in the KC name of a dog ;) ) but back then the KC Reg Dept would come and go a little - several dogs were certainly registered with one additional letter for eg.

It's completely different now of course with the advances of "technology" because "the computer doesn't recognise anything written outside the boxes on the form"

Regards, Teri

The most recent form (from KC in May 04) I have says that "A name must consist of more than one word, but not exceed 24 letters (including a Kennel Name/Affix)." The are 30 available spaces for the proposed name on the registration form - the same as the old green form I used in 1996 - no mention of spaces between words being included.

Edit: A dal at Crufts (born December 03) has the full 24 letters in his name - but it's in 4 words, so uses 27 spaces.
:)

Yet another strange case of the KC - a world of their own   15 years ago I was advised 26 letters (including Affix and spaces).  I registered my first litter last year and guess what? 26 letters including Affix & spaces - my reply to you was what they told me when I telephoned them about 7 months ago :(  For the sake of one lousy letter I couldn't get a name I very much wanted - their best advice was to misspell the word(s) by missing out one letter or more  so I didn't get the name  :(

But, JG, if you can do it differently you'll be very popular with a lot of people (not at the KC of course :D) )
regards, Teri ;)

It is 25 letter including affix, but spaces don't count.  However, you people occassonally get away wiht an extra letter!

Hi Gwen

Thanks for the info but the name I wanted only was 25 letters in total with only two spaces on top of that and they still refused it on the grounds it would take up one more box which the computer wouldn't recognise :(  Like I said this happened only last summer so I guess it just depends on who we are lucky enough (or in my case unlucky enough) to get on the end of the telephone

cheers anyway, Teri :)

Is it not 24??
- By gwen [gb] Date 30.03.05 22:14 UTC
It is indeed 24 - I hit the wrong key when I put 25!

Poachers Pandora , Poachers Pickle, Poachers Predicament Love Sonja
- By gwen [gb] Date 29.03.05 22:01 UTC
Dont want to be a wet blanket, but has the rules on naming changed?  I thought yoiu could only use the same word max. of twice in any litter, which would rule out quite a few of those "Poachers"

Hi Gwen

Unsure about that and intend to phone the KC about it tomorrow. I'm hoping not as I really wanted to have a bit of Dad in each puppies name. Hey ho never mind if it has been changed I'll just have to get my thinking cap on again.

Botany Poacher
Poachers Kaut (caught)
Poachers Catch
- By Alli [gb] Date 30.03.05 12:41 UTC
This is copied from the online Registration form from the KC, so it looks like 24 letters should be ok and I could also get the word poacher in all the names if I wanted I think.

10.Guidelines to Naming Puppies (please read carefully)

a A name must consist of more than one word but not exceed 24 letters.
Added Kennel Name/Affixes should not be included.

b A name which conflicts with an approved current Kennel Name/Affix
granted to another person will not be accepted.

c The surname of the applicant is not acceptable.

d A word cannot be repeated when naming puppies, unless an application
is made to register the word as a Kennel Name/Affix. However, the
repetition of a single common word may be allowed in the centre or end
of the name, providing it cannot be mistaken for a registered Kennel
Name/Affix.

e If a Kennel Name/Affix name is to be used when registering a litter, the
Kennel Name/Affix must appear as the first word in the name. The Kennel
Club will not allow the use of a registered Kennel Name/Affix (exactly as it
is spelt/granted) in any puppy's name, unless the applicant is the
registered Kennel Name/Affix holder.

f A Kennel Name/Affix holder is entitled to repeat their granted word in
each puppy's name (as a prefix).
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 30.03.05 13:15 UTC
There are still 30 boxes on each line for the name, and I can't see they'd put them on the form if they weren't available for use.

Maybe best to phone them and confirm that spaces between words don't count in the 24 letters?
- By Alli [gb] Date 30.03.05 13:19 UTC
Yeah will do. I'll give them a call and hopefully speak to someone who can answer my query. I did wonder as I know of a puppy who was registered recently and he has 28 including affix name and spaces.
- By ice_cosmos Date 30.03.05 17:43 UTC
It's 24 excluding spaces :) I think that as long as the word you want repeated is fairly common and isn't someones affix then thats fine (I know of a litter where all the pups had 'winter' in their registered names).
- By Izzi [im] Date 31.03.05 02:23 UTC
What about *poachers egg*?
:D
- By Kerioak Date 31.03.05 09:44 UTC
Next you will probably find that someone has the word "Poacher" as their affix :)
- By Alli [gb] Date 31.03.05 10:34 UTC
Yeah I know Christine, my only saving grace might be that the puppies all have 'Poachers' as opposed to Poacher, we'll send the names away that we have and see what happens. Meanwhile we'll think about different names just in case. I'm really hoping I get them as I want them all to have a wee bit of Dad.
- By Blue Date 31.03.05 11:27 UTC
It is more difficult than people think isn't it?? I used to think once you had yor affix it would be easy.. :-)

I asked for " my affix  " plus  Aberlady, Abernethy & Aberfeldy once . Abernethy was an affix so the KC sent a replacement as I forgot to tick the box.. the replacement was Aberdoon LOL a terrible name I think..:-)
- By Alli [gb] Date 31.03.05 12:45 UTC
LOL you are right, Aberdoon isn't the best name in the world. I'll be making sure the box is well and truely ticked.
- By Alli [gb] Date 31.03.05 10:36 UTC
lol @ Izzi, when my OH and I were discussing this the other day I said well tell me what you associate with poaching and he said exactly the same thing :D :D
