Can someone advise me as to wether it is possible or advisable to mate a solid colour cocker of a champagne/buff colour with a black and white.many thanks sally.

I'm guessing you're talking about American cockers (English cockers don't come in buff!), but usually if you mate a solid colour to a parti-colour you'll get mismarked pups.

Hi, if we are talking Am. Cockers, then it is possible (well its possible to mate any dog and bitch :) ) but the resulting colours depends on what is behind the parents.   If you are looking at a Buff who has all solid breeding behind it, to a Parti ( B& W) who is all parti behind, then you will get all Solid coloured mismarks.  IF the B & W happens to be a "Dominant Black" then they will all be Blacks, possibly mismarked.  However if either parent are hybrid colour bred, then the colour possibilites are much more complex!  If we are talking Am. Cockers and you want to tell me mmore about the breeding I should be able to help

Aren't colour genetics weird!!  If you put our closest colours to this together you would end up with solids and parti-colours and not solid mismarks.  Actually with the Spanish I hardly ever know what colour I'm going to get, they're a low unto themselves.

It's fascinating, isn't it?  We pretty much always  know what colours will be possible from a mating, but of course cant guarantee which will arrive!  Am mating a parti ( black & white) bitch later this year to a Chocolate dog who is hybrid parti/solid bred.  From that particualr  combination we could get Black & white, Tricolour, red and white, chocolate & white, black, black & tan and  chocolate!  Of course there is a chance some will be mismarked, but it will be an interesting litter to deliver :)  My old Black & White dog was a "dominant black" and when we did hybrid matings regardless of colour of bitch we got blacks  and a small porportion of  Bl;ack & Tans, with quite a number of mismarks.  To partis he produced Black & White and Tricolour, however, the grandchildren include Buffs and Red & White, when we put these colours back into the mix for the next generation.

i have english cockers .The breeding in question will not occur as I have the male and was asked to use him as stud for this champagne coloured female.
I think its best to keep the solids and the mixed colours seperate from the replies i have had . Thanks to all Sally

As champagne isn't an accepted colour in cockers, then I'd say that point alone rules the bitch out of the breeding pool.

I woudl certainly agree with you.  Perhaps she is a pale coloured gold adn owners are a bit ccreative on describing her?  Parti/solid matings are very rearely used in English Cockers, although it is something we do regularly with th eYankees.

The breed supplement contains all manner of weird and wonderful descriptions of cocker colouration when the pups are registered.

The working cocker breeders are generally the worst offenders. Within working breeding it is very common to mix parti and solid colours, and the majority of the solids end up being mis-marked to some extent. I must admit that I quite like the individuality of the mis-marks, but then I'm not trying to win at shows!
