My friend got 2 black Labrador puppies for Christmas, 1 dog and 1bitch. They are completely untrained and keep roaming, the other day they came back with a dead chicken with them! I'm a reasonably experienced dog trainer and own 2 dogs myself who are trained in obedience and agility. I've tried telling her how important it is to discourage them from roaming because it is dangerous and farmers can shoot dogs if they see them in their fields, but she won't listen. I told her it would help if she taught them some basic obedience to focus all their puppy energy on and she should take them for regular walks, I've even told her she could come with me in the evenings when I'm walking my dogs I've also volunteered to teach her to train the puppies while their still young and keen to learn, but she's not interested. I've also suggested neutering the dog as I've heard that it can stop them roaming and as the other dog's a girl it will stop unwanted puppies, but she's not interested in that either! I'm trying not to interfere too much, but she's my best friend, and I really care because if anything happened to those puppies she would break her heart. Can you think of any other way I can let her see how important it is to train such big, lively dogs, and how important it is to stop them roaming?

I'm afraid the best thing that could happen is that these pups are picked up by the dog warden or police and she will have to pay for their return...she might then think next time.

Isn't it against the law to leave a dog to roam,do you live in a rural area?
Have you not warned her that they could be run over and she could either loose her dogs or face massive vet bills some areas of the country have dog nappers who pick up stray dogs especially pedigree and sell them on never to be seen again .
If this is a genuine call for help then I am surprised that someone like yourself who SOUNDS like a sensible law abiding citizen and who genuinly loves animals could actually have a friend who and I make no apologies is a complete idiot.
Hiya,
You could try telling your friend that if one of her friendly labs decides to jump up just to say hello to someone, she could ultimately be prosecuted under the dangerous dogs act, which could mean that one of her beloved pets may lose their lives just because she couldn't be bothered to train them. Also, just because they're brother and sister, they can and will mate with each other and she may end up with 10 or 12 labradors that may be unhealthy as they are so closely related. How would she feel if she had to put a large number of puppies to sleep? As she lets them roam, I'll bet that they don't wear collars either!
If one of her dogs ran into the road and caused a collision where someone died, I bet she wouldn't be quite so blase about it, would she?
This is the worse type of owner, it makes me so mad!!!
Sorry for the rant
Ali :)
