Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Advice about a staffy from a rescue
- By netty2 [us] Date 28.03.05 09:32 UTC
Hi

Can anyone how has a staffy give me advice, i have been to a rescue centre to see a male staffy he is 10 to 12 mths old hes seem's friendley enough although my husband said that he would proberly be a bit more boystress but as hes been at the vets on a drip because of a tummy upset and is pitterly thin he's not got the energy a staffy would normally have, i really have fallen in love with him but my husband need some convincing he's always liked the dogs but has been told there a lot of hard work.
The rescue say he seem's fine with other dogs and hes great with people they also say the he hasn,t chewed anything in his chennel, we have also been told that as a breed they are bad for chewing and as we both work this may be an issue, we have a 3 yr old which i don't think will be a problem i no staffy are little more rough in play than other dogs but hes still quite young.

please can someone give me advice or things to look for when we see him again

Thanks

Hi Netty
not all staffys chew. My youngest was a bit of a chewer when very young but my eldest has never chewed anything. You can buy kongs and nylabones for them to chew on if they feel the need.
When you say he will be left alone when at work will this be for very long periods? Is there someone who can come and check on him / walk him in the day? Staffys adore attention and cuddles and especially with him being  a rescue and ill he may need time settling in. Can you take a bit of time off work?
Staffys are fantastic dogs- yes, they can be boisterous and may need a firm hand due to their strength but they are super when you get to know the breed. Brilliant with children but supervision will be required as with any other breed when mixing with children. They can get a bit exciteable thats all.

Let us know what you decide and if you have any other questions or need any advice please let us know and Im sure we'll all do our best to help :)

Good luck :)

Hi

Thanks for you advice i do work betwen 6 and 7 hrs a day but some days will be able to pop back, the rescue said to cage him but i don;t like that idea, i thought that he would be ok in the utility room with one of the dog gates on its got under floor heating and someone else said leave the radio on for him if he doesn;t settle at that my mum may come and walk him a few days a week but she has a 1 yr old cross breed bitch, what would be the best way to introduce them, or do you think my husband is right and he would reck the palce. at the rescue he hasn't chewed and they said that normally the plactic bed would be the first in line,

what do you think

thanks

hi i have a female staffy an dshe lives with 2 other dogs and i have 3 kids i have had her from a pup and she is a lovely dog with people and other dogs. they do chew and saffy is nearly 2 and she still occasionly chews when we first got her she had the toys and the kong filled with food but when i got back from work ( i only work 3hrs a day) she had chewed the sofa you cant shout at staffys she new she had done wrong from the minute i walked through the door so i just ignored her for a couple of hrs very difficult! so since then when i go to work the dogs are locked out of all the rooms and just have the run of the hall and landing but ive had to put a box on the back of my door so she doesnt chew the post!! my advice is you need to be at home the majority of the time with a staff has they love company. and if you cant commit to that then i think you should consider getting another breed.

Hi Netty
I would expect the plastic bed to be the first to get it ;)
Like I say my eldest has never chewed.
I would be a little concerned about the amount of time hes left alone though especially coming from a kennel environment. Would you be able to take a week off work to settle him in at all ? Plus when you say you mum *may* be able to walk him etc you really need something concrete for the dogs welfare as well as your own peace of mind.

No problems whatsoever with keeping him in the utility room - as you say its warm and dry :) With a nice bed of his own and some filled kongs :)

On neutral territory is probably best- and dont forget he will probably be a bit exciteable due to being where he currently is.
Are you allowed to take him for short walks beforehand so he can get used to you? I know some rescue centres allow this

Yes we will be able to take him for a walk but hes back at the vets at the moment he's really i'll i'm very worried and he's not even mine yet but hes lost soooo much wait that they said we couldn't walk him last time we went as someone will call the rspca if they see him with us hes so bad but i keep ringing every day

Thanks
