Hi all, my sister in law is considering getting a dog. Just about all the members of her family own 1 or 2. She has been very scared of dogs since her childhood but since we all have a dog she has come right around and is considering breeds. Believe me when I say this dog will be LOVED, but the breed she goes for will not have to be too big, require a walk in the evening and big walks at weekends. She is on her own so on winter nights might to be walked very far. I just wanted some ideas of which breeds to introduce her to.

Hope you can shed light on some for me.

Thanks in anticipation!!

A Spanish Water Dog is quite a good one.  They absolutely adore their family members and have a close bond.  But and it's a big BUT they have to be socialised with other people from an early age as they can be quite shy if not.  Don't know where your sister in law lives but they'd be more than welcome to see mine some time !!

i have a mini daschund there a very loyal dog & a lap dog and dont need walking very often.there quite happy to stay in! but not good with young kids, there not agressive well mine isnt! but because there so small if dropped by a child picking them up thay can injure there backs quite easily! i personally wouldnt have any other breed!

If you want to look at all the different breeds try looking on the CD search pages :)  or you can go to the Kennel Club website and click on - breed standards

http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/

Almost everyone will recommend their favourite breed/s ;) but there are so many different breeds to choose from :)  does she want short/long/wire/rough haired ?  Short legs or long?  Big/medium or small dog? etc .

Once she has identified the breeds she likes the look/sound of it will be easier to ask questions about the finer details and narrow the field still further :) :)

What about a cross breed ? There are lots of nice mutts looking for homes in rescues, and if she goes to Dogs Trust they can help her find a good match. Some have issues, many are just down on their luck. Im biased as I have one :)
