Did anyone else see the pictures of this breed in last weeks dog paper's - I thought they looked lovely rather like a small Borzoi. Apparently they have been created using the longhaired whippet ( I did'nt know that whippets came in two coat varieties ).

Does anyone know anything else about this breed ?

Yeah Yvonne, I saw them too and I agree with what you say they look like.  Cannot possible see the point of them, especially when they say (on some sites) they are being developed for agility and their "prey" drive is being diminished and their "chase" drive enhanced!!!!!!

I didn't see the article but have heard of  the Silken Windhounds.   They are thought to be created using Border Collie infusion to get the long hair as the mutant gene MDR1 (Multi Drug Resistance) which originated in the BC, has been found in the gene pool.  This manifests as sensitivity to ivermectin common in BCs and other breeds descended from them.

I'm sure they're lovely little dogs, great for agility!

Did anyone see the letter in this week's Dog World about them?  I wait for the fireworks next week!    Seemingly they don't breed true to type which isn't really want a pedigree dog is about though is it?

Did'nt realise that they don't breed true - does the longhaired whippet then?. We very nearly got a Borzoi some years ago and after lots of contact with the breed and lots of thought decided that their sheer size might be a bit of a problem so I was interested in this smaller alternative particularly as I love the easy going whippet temperament and want a dog that can join my Belgians in agility ( just for fun - I'm not nearly good enough to compete ;))

Yes, apparently the LH Whippet does.

sound like expensive lurchers to me ;(......like we really need another mongrel breed here!

Have just looked at the International breed club site - they look lovely :)  I don't think they are mongrels - from what I've read there and elsewhere they have longhaired whippet blood in them, a genetic fluke kind of thing, the same way longhaired weims started out (as well as a longhaired dobe I have a pic of and some lnghaired dalmatians!).

I'd love one myself, but apparently they don't like being wrestled with much by other dogs - I think my two would nark it off :p

I know this is an old post but I've just found it. Silken Windhounds are now a well established breed in the USA and mainland europe and have recently appeared here too. They do not have collie blood, they were originally developed by crossing long haired whippets with borzois. Borzoi followers will be interested to know that the gorgeous bitch Am & Eng. Ch. Stillwater Virginia Reel is behind them. Each puppy is DNA profiled and a strict record is kept of them all. They do breed true to type and are absolutely gorgeous :)   Check out www.silkenwindhound.com for more info
