EEEK,
I have just wormed little pup with Drontal from the vet and the poor little man has just passed about 5 of the biggest roundworms I have ever seen!! :( Just out of interest does anyone know if the wormer actually kills the worms or just expels them from the gut? And how long will this one dose keep emptying him? I'm a bit concerned that if I put him in his cage tonight and he's still firing out worms theres gonna be a right mess in the morning which isn't nice for him or me!
I'm also wondering if theres anything I should give him to counteract the effect these worms may of had on him, no wonder he's been so hungry since we had him, those worms must have been having a field day to get that big!

Just to say yuck! And oh how wish for this problem instead of mine! My pup was wormed the day before we picked him up so I get to wait till next week-end for this joy:D

I usually worm first thing in the morning and by the night it's all over so you should be ok. Of course there is always the one with a gippy tummy who is a bit loose for a day or so but I've never had problems. As for whether they are dead or not, Ive never seen one move so I'd have to assume they have turned their toes up!

John, I gave him the wormer this morning in the hope that it would be all over by tonight and I think it is, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope he keeps his legs crossed!! :) I was watching to see if they moved but they didn't! so hopefully they are dead :D

Anita,
how have they been today?
- By dizzy [gb] Date 18.05.02 18:00 UTC
hadnt your breeder been woming the pups? you can start really young now with wormers, when you picked up your pup at around 7-8weeks he/she should of been wormed at least twice already,
- By julie white [gb] Date 18.05.02 19:41 UTC
he said he had wormed them with panacur and even showed me the box but I would say that they've not been done properly, poor little chap is quite bloated, I'm just hoping it hasn't done any damage, other than that he is appears in good health. :)

id be suprised if i saw worms if theyd been done properly, ive never had problems with them doing them as they tell you, never mind hes got to feel a lot better now :D

I've never seen anything like it in the other pups I've had either, or in any horses I've wormed either!! I'm going to phone the vet on monday and see what they think about giving him another dose quite soon or leave it until the next is due in 2 weeks.
- By dizzy [gb] Date 18.05.02 20:04 UTC
i know someone else who had the sme as you and asked the vet if they could do a sooner worming, he advised them not too just to wait the 2 weeks, talkingof horses a good freind of mine bought a horse of a not good freind of mine :(. anyhow when she wormed it she rang me up to call into her place, ive never seen anything like it--you'd think she had a snake pit, they where huge, and masses of them, :(

ee gods that is gross!! I did a course years ago to become licenced to sell horse wormers and we had the delight of looking at all the different sorts in jars and bottles! could put you off spaghetti for life!:D

Thank you Julie! I used to like Spag Bol! :(
- By sam Date 18.05.02 20:27 UTC
when I wormed my last litter it looked just like spag bol. in the pen!!!
I have seen live ones from one of my adult hounds, after 8 years of constant worming he always seemed to have them!
- By dianep [gb] Date 18.05.02 20:27 UTC
I'm glad I read this now and not 3 hours ago. Spag. Bol was really tasty but this has put me off now!!

Sorry John! :D I just try not to look when I'm eating it

Hi Julie, I wouldn't worm the puppy again til the next allotted time in 2 weeks. The wormer should have cleared the adult worms - certainly sounds like it!! - and another two or three doses once a fortnight will sort out any younger ones coming along behind. I NEVER eat spagetti unless its dished up by friends, and have to eat it without looking at it - not easy!!

Little chap looks much better today, not half as bloated as yesterday, and no more worms have appeared so I think it will be best to follow the advice to just worm as normal. I'm also going to get wormers for the other dogs from the vet as well instead of the ones from the pet shop jsut to make sure, I'm also trying to persuade my neighbour to do her cat as he comes in the garden and uses the dogs pen as a litter tray occasionally!!

HI JULIE I BROUGHT A PUP YEAR AGO AND WHEN I WORMED HER THERE WAS MORE WORMS THEN POO SHE PARST TWO LOTS CARNT REMEMBER NOW WHAT BREEDER SAID SHE HAD WORMED HER WITH BUT DID RING HER AT TIME TO ADVISE THE OTHER PUPPYS NEW OWNERS TO WORM AT ONCE,BELIVE IT OR NOT SHE WASENT BLOTTED AND WASENT FILLING OUT ARFTER A MEAL LIKE 10 WEEK OLD PUP SHOULD DO SHE WASENT PUTTING ON WEIGHT,
sO I WORMED HER 3 DAYS EARLY EXPECTING TO SEE COUPLE OF WORMS BUT NOTHINK LIKE THAT,
I WORMED HER TWO WEEKS LATER AND NONE WERE FOUND SHE HAS BEEN OK EVER SINCE DIDNT CAUSE HER AND PROBS.
IT WAS A BALL OF WORMS AND I DIDNT SEE ANY MOVEING MUST HAVE BEEN ABOUT 20 IN EACH LOT.
THATS WHAT YOU CALL SPAG JUNCTION

One of the kennel maids that my parents used to work with years ago totally went off spaghetti after worming the Bull Terriers, she's never eaten it since.
- By julie white [gb] Date 20.05.02 13:20 UTC
me and the kids have just had super-noodles for dinner, thought if I didn't eat something noodley/spagghettish soon I never would! Can't wait until week after next when I have to do it again :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.05.02 08:04 UTC
If the pup had been wormed with Panacur you shouldn't have seen whole worms! It disolves them, so you shouldn't see them. Maybe he didn't do each individually. If he used the granules and ther pup didn't eat it's portion that might have been the case. I always weigh each pup, and over the three days dose them after their second or third solid meal of the day, direct into the mouth by syringe!
- By julie white [gb] Date 20.05.02 13:22 UTC
there was nothing dissolved about these little devils I can tell you! By the time he comes to meet you at training he'll be well and truly worm free!:D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.05.02 23:04 UTC
See you then, but will be knackered after a day at Bath Ch show! Turns out the breeder stakes are not on until 5pm! Our breed classes are on first thing :(
