Yes , they can pant for a good few days after whelping, they sometimes still go off digging the carpet up too for a long while after,
I have had bitches that have panted a lot after whelping and the vet has told me it's eclampsia for which they had calcium injections and tablets afterwards and the panting calmed down. If I was you I'd see a different vet.

My bitch panted for days on end (or so it seemed) after whelping. I took her to the vet who checked her over and explained that panting is caused by changes in the metabolic rate during whelping. It takes a while for the body to adjust to the massive changes it undergoes.
Before panicking too much, why don't you ask your current vet specific questions about the possibility of eclampsia? I am sure he will be able to give you an effective answer.

All my girls pant for days, sometimes weeks after whelping. I've had one bitch come down with eclampsia, but she had other signs ie. she was full of milk as though she hadn't fed the pups, very restless almost frantic, her pupils had gone very small and she was very grumbly.
I'm sure she's ok, but if you are worried then speak to your vet, they can do a blood test to check her calcium levels.......we have this done every 2 weeks with my girl that had eclampsia after her last litter.

hi, she is panting and today she is digging as well,i am giving her calcium tablets from the vet, should i still have her checked for eclampsia do you think.thanks debs
My bitch Panted for well over a week and would dig under the bed several times a day, she carried on digging until around 4 weeks actually, i had her checked out at the vets post birth and everything was fine, if you are giving her calcium tablets and plenty to eat, then i wouldnt worry .
