My two year old lab wont recieve the stud I have chosen. This is her first time and he is extremly interested but she wont stand, she sits down or walks away from him. I have had them together from day 5 to day 18 still nothing. Also with every other of heat period I have noticed swelling of her vagina this time round it swelled for a few days and then went away although she was still bleeding a little. Is it possible that she is having a false heat period. Any info would be appreciated as books dont tell you what to do when things dont go exactly to plan.

Its certainly true that bitches have seasons of varying "strength". The same bitch can have very strong seasons and then have a very half hearted one with very little swelling etc and then after go back to "normal" ones. Typical, if she is to have a half hearted one, it will be when you want her mated.

Your vet might be able to help by doing a smear test to check her heat and see what her hormone levels are.

It may need more than two people to mate your bitch when she is ready. Sometimes a maiden bitch is scared and tends to " sit on it!"
Solution is have someone hold her head, someone with the dog, and a person she knows well( you perhaphs) with a knee under her tummy to hold her up. Once they are tied she will accept him quite happily.

Not always Phil .... she might try and break the tie.
You have to be ready for every eventuality, so keep the Liquid Paraffin BP handy ;-)

Do I want to know what the Liquid Paraffin is for?????

When a bitch breaks a tie, the dog is left 'exposed'. Liquid Paraffin BP is a lubricant. You take the dog off to 'calm down' and pour a little Liquid Paraffin BP on him.
It stops him drying out and helps him retract. Was that discreet enough ;-)

This is assuming that he doesn't need veterinary attention.

I have found in the past that splashing the " item" with cold water helps too!!!!!!! ;) lol

Or spray it Phil - take one old Flash kitchen spray, wash well, fill with cold water, place in fridge for a couple of hours and spray away :-). A tuft left long either side when trimming the item makes useful 'handles' for helping things back into place too.

Does that work for humans too Sharon?? :D

Dunno Val - Ian always runs away when I pick up the little pair of curved scissors :-) But an old nurses trick for 'unwanted exposure' is to flick it hard with a forefinger .....

I'll remember that. Thanks. It's surprising what you can learn on this board!!

LOL Sharon reminds me of my days as a Nurse.

Hi Leigh, Oh how right you are, hence the three people, easier to keep them in place with three! lol

Wish I had known this years ago, I re-homed my first and only stud dog as he never got the hang of tying (or I was too useless to handle him properly) nd was always having this "problem". It was hell trying to sort him out after each mating and in the end gave up with having a stud dog as I was so worried that he would injure himself badly. If only I had had 4 hands - one to hold him, 2 to sort him, and one to swig the parrafin for dutch courage, I might have managed it better!! :-)

If the tie is broken does that mean the bitch won't get pregnant?

Just curious as my dog had a broken tie today...did tie for about 5 minutes though, then he pulled away but was all exposed!

I must just add that it wasn't with my bitch, who has only just had a litter 3 months ago and is being spayed in the very near future, before her next season! I don't want to have pups again as I got to upset about them going when the time came.

Also another question my dog would not mate her in her garden but as soon as we put them on neutral ground he was more than willing...why?
- By emma [gb] Date 19.05.02 21:53 UTC
No even just a 'slip mating' is sometimes enough for pregnancy to accur.
slip mating is penetration but no tie!!!!!!!

sometimes if you have other male dogs a younger dog may feel intimidated by the smell of the other male and not perform!!! :)

My friend always says that it's complete chance that the bitch will either miss or fall preg- take your eyes off her for a split second when out and you're guaranteed the first Heinz57 that comes along- she'll fall preg:D :D :D

If he tied for 5 minutes then it was a Tie, they break spontaneously once the engorgement of the male bulb starts to reduce, and the bitches muscles relax. It is also normal for the dog to come away froma mating all exposed, and he will usually lick himself and the penis will slowly retract back into the sheath!

sorry if this is too graphic for breakfast time, lol :D

I must say that most of my bitches are 'well up for it' until the dog puts his paws on their backs, maybe this is down to the fact that my male dog mounts them all day long when they are not in season.
But they all needed to be held gently to stop them turning round and sitting on it , they are fine throughout and even suck up to him for another go once they have finsihed.
I always hold the bitch when matting as it is safer for both of them although i usually get the messy end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
