I was wondering if anybody here owns american cockers?
I am very interested in getting a little american as a companion and show dog!
I would love to hear other owners' experiences with this breed!
Thanks!

There are several of us on this site wiht Yankees, including Dawn, and Helen (who joined recently) I have owned the breed for 15 years and shown them for 10 years. They are wonderful, and I am always happy to talk about them

Hi Carol,
I am now the very proud owner of an American Cocker. He is 15 weeks old (Alfie) and i can honestly say i am thrilled with him. I find them quite stunning dogs to look at. I,ve had several breeds in the past (an afghan, poodle, lab ) but this breed surely has to be the most stunning. I find him lively, bright, very happy and a pleasure to live with. :o)

Gwen in answer to your earlier post about me showing Alfie, his first show is May 8th. Its only an open show and it co incides with Birmingham i think, but nevertheless good practise for the two of us. We,re both novices lol
Hi
I have just imported a black & white parti dog from the world famous
DE LA GRAN ALDEA KENNEL, Argentina.
I also have two adorable black & white puppies Freddy & Tiffany from BODUF, and a black bitch Paige who is currently being campaigned with much success in Europe.
Yankees are great !
Peter

I have a confesssion... :embarrassed: I'm starting to really like yanks, before I could never understand them, they whern't the normal gundogs because of all teh coat, but I'm now starting to like them. Especially since one sat next to me and was really loving! :D acted liek one of my setters so I fell in love with them!

I think that they're a lovely looking breed but got enough with my hairy Spanish and I don't think that I could cope with that coat. Much prefer the natural look :d Dread anybody getting a Spanish and starting to brush them. They are a very striking breed.

Glad you are starting to like them, underneath all the hair they really should be a true sporting spaniel! Always amazed when I am at shows in the USA and see the dogs working in agility, and the ones going off to the trials. They consider them a "proper" hunting (gundog) out there. We get a poor PR over here as being all coat and no brains!

Gwen

Forgot to mention, I then saw a red and white one in a picture and fell in love with it, it had marking similar to what you might find ina red and white setter, I think that made me like one even more becuase it looked like a IRWS in colour but more glamourous in coat, the picture was also of movement and was fantastic, But don't worry, I won't be getting one.

Hi again,

Date 31.03.05 21:34 UTC

Hi yes I have Afterglows all over the place, both Yankees and Pugs - I am partner with Mike in the Affix :) Dawn also has a bunch of Afterglows. Wherabouts are you based? Are you coming to the club show on Sudnay to visit? I ralise your Alfie is too young to compete.

Yes I have 3 Afterglows and another 3 honorary Afterglows. Levi, Lily and Kitty are the real macoy and Duncan is honorary because he's owned in partnership with Mike, and Poppy and Jasmine have both parents as Afterglows so are Afterglow in all but name.
I'll be at the club show with Kitty and Jasmine. See you there.
Dawn R.
PS, this is my 999th post, so I'm off to find something else to write before I go to bed.

How is Kitty? Has she settled back down yet? Dont forget to get photos taken on Suday (another of my fund raising ploys) all class winners get a free pic to take home but everyone else can have them done for £2.50 - Di is in charge of the booth. Have a silent auction again, as well as the stall, and a £1 lucky dip too - so expect ot spend lots! WE have got loads of really great stuff this time, sent over from the USA - I dipped into the supply early, as it was Junior's birthday today (7, can you believe it?) and he is now the proud owner of a "Hoody" sweatshirt and a collar and lead, all with stars n stripes! At this rate I willl be spent out before Sunday!

Hi Daisy, good luck at the show with your boy Alfie!! :) it will be soooooo exciting taking him to his very first show!!! :)
I really can't wait for my exams to be over so I can (at last!) search for a little Yankee of my own! even if I am kept busy (very!!!) at shows grooming and handling shelties, my fave part of the day is always going over to the Yankee ring and watching them being groomed and shown! they really are wonderful dogs, and showing one must be so great!!!!!
best of luck to you and Alfie!
Carol :)
Hi Carol,
Many thanks for wishing me luck, it is my first time showing americans ( i did show my afghan hound many many years ago but i didnt handle her) and also my first time as a handler. I am a little apprehensive as although he is a lovely confident dog and virtually stands himself he is still a little monkey on the lead. He does love to grab a part ofd the lead and carry it himself, this worries me in case he does it in the ring. Any tips on how to get him to trot out nicely would be great. I know hes still a babe and learning the ropes, after all hes still only five months. He is a beautiful dog and he comes out of Gallmars (Mum) and Cosaltas (Father). My breeder has advised me to enter a couple of small open shows first to find our feet before the big one in June (Blackpool).
No advice re Yankees but good luck at Blackpool, this will be Idõ's first champ show too :D I'm sooo excited, we have one open lined up so far before but he's such a natural already(head swelling as I speak!!)
May be try shortening the lead so he can't grab any of it, you'll probably have to bend down, I do this..kills my back but it means he moves better :)
Good luck with him
Emily

Hi Daisy, as I don't have my own yankee yet I'm not really the best person to advise on them in the ring, :) but when it comes to showing the shelties, I just remember to keep confident, focus on the dog at all times, and just hope for the best! best of luck with Alfie, he sounds like a great little guy!

Hello!
Don't want to offend anyone but was really disappointed with American cockers from the UK presented on the Crufts. Swedish cockers got their deserved wins. Here is Caci`s COMET http://219swem927737.dogterminal.com/ Saw her dogs on other shows, it's really worth to see! So, if I wanted a black show cocker I would look to that direction. There are very good buff cockers breeded by L. Pishard in France De La Vigie kennel. Black&tans in Spain, also blacks in Brasilia (sorry, don't remember the names at the moment). Party colors I would import form the USA or there is a Danish kennel "Galaxy". Why don't you import them from Europe or the US, look around the world. I like Argentinian party colored linked here but they have not the best faces on my taste.
Criticized your American cockers but must admit you have wonderful English cocker stock! :) I myself an owner of English cocker spaniel... Unfortunately the majority of UK kennels don't have web sites and not many people know about them. Many of my friends would be interested to see and get good blood lines in their kennels. Why do you hide them? :)
Best wishes from Europe :)

Well there were a lot of super American Cockers missing as the judge had bred them & some of the very best American Cockers anywhere had to stay home as in the UK you are not allowed to judge dogs that you have bred

Thanks for that Moonmaiden!
Hi Tann, in the UK top winning kennel for the last 10 years or so has been Afterglow, but as Mike was judging, none of our dogs could exhibit. Our Blacks are world famous, and one of our boys took winners dog at the Summer National last year, showing they can hold their own over the Atlantic , while our Parti pup won his class over there too. On Saturday at the Norhtern Club show here in the UK a litter brother of the black dog in the USA went BIS, and finished his title, while another litter brother just arrived in New Zealand has already won 2 majors. The boy in the USA is one point short of his title, which has been a little slow coming due to health problems with his handler our there.
Our partis are closely related to Adolfo's Argentian dogs, as Dexter (SH Ch boduf Pistols at Dawn with Afterglow) was out of Tiffany, who was All Americans full sister. We consistently import top quality dogs from the USA, and have also gone over there both for regular and AI matings We also brought in a stunning buff boy from Finalnd last year, who is already proving his worth at stud for us.
This years crufts, while great fun, and the winning dogs were spectacular with wonderful movement, did not give a true picture of American Cockers showing in the UK at the mment, or th epedigree liens which are in the UK

Gwen

Just to Add the other Mike as in Mike Bottomley(Boduf)couldn't show his top American as Mike(the Judge)bred that one too

Hi
I have recently imported a beautiful black & white parti dog from Argentina ! Apolo De La Gran Aldea, he has a superb head, It is hoped he will be campaigned in the UK, Ireland and Europe.
He is a direct descendant of Homestead's All American ! he will be mated to my black & white parti Boduf bitch who is a granddaughter of Boduf Pistols At Dawn, son of Homestead's Tiffany (full sister to Homestead's All American)
I think it is important to introduce new bloodlines, which also combine some of the lines already in our pedigrees. We await Apolo's arrival into the UK with much anticipation.

Hi Tann,
I too have afterglow americans and I wanted to say what wonderfull little dogs they are, I also have irish setters which I have shown for over 15yrs, my first export is going to Finland in a few weeks time so I hope he does well. I tried the links to comets americans but cant seem to get it, do you have another web address for them, and also the other sites you were talking about??

Date 13.04.05 18:05 UTC

Hi Helen, as well as six Yankees, I also have an Irish Setter. They are a nice combination aren't they. My Irish is coming up to nine years old now, so hasn't been shown for a while, I've been so busy keeping the Americans in coat for showing. Maybe I should do a few more Veteran classes with him. His name is Bailey, AKA Cataluna Son of a Gun. Bred by Liz Rose-Hay, by Sh Ch Starchelle Chicago Bear and out of Cataluna Au Contraire. He got his Stud book number, but nothing else of note, but he did very well at Open Shows in his day. Would have won his SCM several times over if it had existed earlier.

Hi again Helen, I'm over on the other coast, between Bedlington and Morpeth, Northumberland.
I got into Americans because of my oldest daughter, now 19. When she was 12 or 13 she wanted her own dog to show, and her chosen breed was the American Cocker. So the first one is a litter brother of Ambrose and Arrabella. However he developed an undershot bite at 5 months, damn it!! We still have him (Levi) because he was a gift to her from me. Duncan was a consolation gift from Mike, and we own him in partnership. He was a stunning puppy B/T but went somewhat overdone by the time he was mature, he also still lives the life of Reilly, pardon the pun, here with us. These two are completely clipped off down almost to the skin, and they trudge through the fields and woods every day with Bailey.
Next I bought a black bitch, an Ambrose daughter, Afterglow Emmanuelle. She gave me my first litter, which consisted of only two bitch puppies, and I kept both. I'm showing the one buff, Trunorth Pirouette, she's by Sh Ch Afterglow Engelbert, which makes her a double Ambrose granddaughter. Kitty, Afterglow What's New Pussycat, is also owned in partnership with both Mike and Gwen, and is to be mated on her next season, hopefully to Douglas Fashion, but Mike and Gwen might have other ideas.
Well thats my crowd, no doubt we'll meet eventually, and talk Irish and American to eachother.

Hi Dawn,
We have probably met and never realised, my first bitch is from mikes Finish import, which I own outright, and my other is a son of dougles fashion I think this was his first litter, he is also in partnership with Mike,
I am picking a black and white parti up this weekend from Gilda Rix, do you know her? if you want to send me a private e-mail that would be fine,
I am not too sire how to do it as I dont often go on the site daily, but I seem to have been this week, must be the interest in yanks that keeps me coming back.

Hello Helen, figured out how to get to the web address mentioned for the photo of Caci's Comet!!! :)
Ok, go to http://www.dogterminal.com/ then click on 'Dogs' on the top right corner.....then there will be a long list of breeds, scroll down to the end to find yankees on right bottom, and click on it, now type Caci's Comet into 'database search' on top right hand corner, then the next page will have Caci's Comet first of a list of dogs, click on the name and you should get the picture on screen :)
sorry this sounds sooooo long and complicated!!!!!!
ok one more hour of study :( ............!!!
