My GSD had two lovely puppies on Sunday, they are doing fine both good weights (first litter) but my bitch is not eating very well, keep trying her on all sorts of food she likes but is not interested, is this normal.  Took her to the vets on Monday as she was not very settled, no more pups could be felt but vet gave her an injection to contract her womb just in case and an antibiotic as her tempreture was up a bit. I am keeping one pup the other is going to a friend who has had GSD for many years so both will have good homes. Thanks for any help.

Hi Guest,

Congratulations on the safe arrival of the pups :)

My bitch was very off her food for almost the first week after whelping which really concerned me - I got her to eat but it was a struggle finding something to tempt her :(  It really would be best if you could join because then you could provide more info and respond to any replies but here's two scenarios - one of which you're already doing, in which case try the opposite :D

Are you feeding her while she is in with the pups?  In which case she may not like the distraction
Are you removing her from them to feed her? In which case she may be too anxious to return to them

HTH a little, but please join when you're not busy puppy gazing and trying to tempt Mum :P,  regards, Teri

Hi

My girl had 8 puppies (all doing well) and I gave her Scrambled eggs,Lactol, puppy porridge and hand fed her with anything I could to get her started, also I gave her James Wellbeloved puppy kibble with tuna etc from my fingers, cheese, mince you name it I tried it and she is eating for England now and the puppies have all more than doubled their birth weight.

Good luck and keep trying ( oh do not make the food too dry give her a little oil on it ie virgin or sunflower)

I had this many years ago with a bitch I bred from, the only food we found she would eat was from a company called Dugdales, don't think they are still going so it shows how long agao it was. Anyway we had had a lot of snow during the night when she had her pups and we were so worried as she refused to eat anything. All the roads were blocked nobody was going anywhere! I'd been to Crufts about a week earlier and collected some food samples, in desparation we tried these and the only one she would eat was Dugdales. So we contacted the company and their rep a chap called John Burnham came out to us that day, with sacks of the food. We had to take the tractor out and dig through the snow to clear the roads so he could get through! Now that is service!

Congrats on the litter.  Any bitches who need tempting after whelping I try with chicken, liver, and goats milk or puppy weaning milk.
bye
