hi i am thinking about getting a mini schnauzer puppy what should i look for and do they have problems with their eyes. what about trainning are they easy to look after and train do they like lots of people and children?? any info greatfully received.. thanks.

Miniature Schnauzers are a lovely breed, as with all breeds of dog they need plenty of socialisation with other dogs and people. 
Please be aware that the coat is a major commitment and that clipping it may be a short cut that you will live to regret, a stripped coat is much easier to keep looking smart.  The furnishings however are very profuse on most of them and need attention every day if painful mats are to be avoided, so you really have to like brushing and combing and will have to teach the pup to enjoy it. 
They like the sound of their own voice and will use it to excess if allowed.

I own two mini schnauzers and as the poster above said the coat is a big commitment however once you fit it into your routine it wont become an issue. I have one clipped and the other stripped and the younger stripped dog really looks the business but you have to strip from day one otherwise you can damage the coat if it is clipped.

On the whole i love the breed (hence why i have two) i find them to be intelligent and playful they are also very loving and are happiest when they are in the same room (ideally cuddling up to you lol)

They can be a little 'vocal' sometimes as they are of the terrier breed but with the correct training from an early age im sure you can keep this to a minimum if it is an issue. Its also down to the dog, my eldest isnt at all noisy but my youngest likes to announce to the world that he is coming outside. Its part of their personality.

They dont need huge amounts of exercise but obviously all dogs need fresh air and a nice walk every day, i dont have children myself but i believe schnauzers make good family pets and get on well with children so that may be of interest.

As for eye problems, if you want to buy a quality kc reg puppy the breeders will have had their dogs eye tested and you should be able to see a copy of this when you visit. You might find it useful to get a book or two on the breed before you decide to get one, just so you can be sure they are right for you.

I love schnauzers and always have, there is just something about them that appeals to me - but im sure most people say that about their chosen breed.

I have three miniature schnauzers and five pups! I am a major fan! They are brave feisty little dogs with very strong personalities.They are prone to being very vocal, but are incredibly loyal and loving. They DO need a firm hand or they can take over the household given half a chance.They are very good for families and excellent with children,totally( but never say never) trustworthy and extremely intelligent.As with all breeds they can suffer from eye problems,cataracts etc.If you look on the Schnauzer club of GB website you will find more details. It is advisable to have your pup eye checked which can be done from 8 weeks old. I have checked with the dog opthamologist who informs me that eye problems in the schnauzer are less common than they used to be and he hasn't failed a dog in over two years ,which is encouraging. You will also need to have your dog clipped or stripped every eight weeks. This is important to ensure the coat does not become matted.Regular grooming is also part and parcel of Schnauzer ownership. Perhaps it would be sensible to take your puppy to socialization classes which you will find out about from your vet or other dog owners. A schnauzer is not a dog that likes to be left at home. They hate isolation and feel that it is their right to accompany you wherever you go !  My dogs like to come along with me in the car just for the ride even when I go shopping! You have made a good choice of dog and I am sure that you will not be disappointed. Always buy a kc reg pup and check the kennel club website to find a list of pups available in your area.Good Luck!
