My friend is going on holiday soon & has asked me to look after her dog> I'm wondering just what I would be taking on as I have a dog of my own with whom her dog gets on with extremely well. But 2 weeks is a long time to cope if things go wrong. Any suggestions. Amy.

Hi Amy,
I've had friends' dogs stay with me for varying periods and all's worked well - but 2 full weeks is a big commitment   Great the dogs get on well but I assume they're not normally used to living within the same household for periods?  Even if things go OK for a day or two, this won't necessarily last - it can be 3-4 days before dogs in a different set of circumstances (even if familiar environment) show any stresses etc (*IF* they show any at all that is ;) )
Why not have your friend look after your dog and her own for say 3 days and 2 nights and then swap to your place for the same period.  If both dogs are still easy in each others company over food, sleeping areas, toys, cuddles, settling down for similar rest length periods etc.,  then you will have a much better idea of how well or not things will go for a full fortnight :)   This way if it looks dodgy your friend hopefully has time to make different arrangements (although I'd recommend she has emergency arrangements in place anyway either with family or kennels just to cover all eventualities).
HTH, and good luck,
Teri :)

ide sugest having him for a couple of nights first and see how you cope, that way if it doesnt work out you wont have to put up with it for a couple of weeks! and your friend will have to rfind someone else for the dog! x

I would say have him for a few days first. We looked after my friends dog for 2 weeks last year he got on really well with Abby, in his own house he was an angel in my house it was hell he spent his time growling at my kids, he bit me ate my shoes and on walks I had to keep him on lead as he tried to attack every dog we met, we have had OH sisters dog to stay and it has been fine.
Good luck
Mary
