Topic Dog Boards / General / Labradors & Dobermanns - thoughts please

Hi - would appreciate your comments on us getting a dobermann puppy.  We have a 2 year old choc lab (male) and husband works from home so company, exercise & training are not a problem.  Just wanted to get your views on how a dobe and lab would get on, from looking through breed stds their temperaments seem well matched, but our choc lab is pretty boisterous and so would we be better getting another male or a female and getting one or both spayed/castrated?

Hi Tylers Pal

Definitely do not get a male Dobermann as you already have one even though it is a different breed.  Providing you are prepared for a completely different type of dog I don't see why a Labrador and Dobermann should not get on - Dobermanns do play hard and you will need to do a lot of training separately from your current male to eventually get a "nice, well behaved citizen Dobe" :)

thanks for your quick reply - in what way would you say they are completely different?

There are some Dobermanns that are compared to Labradors and this is not meant as a compliment but means they are very calm :)  One is a retriever and the other originally designed as a personal protection dog (I believe the only breed designed for this particular purpose)
